I’d heard of this for years but finally watched it. This was made on the eve of WWII by MGM as an anti-war parable (just before Hitler began his blitzkrieg attacks), in which after humanity has wiped itself off the face of the earth, the animals take over, moving into the abandoned helmets and making them their homes and using bayonets as lamp posts.

It’s an unusual message for a major studio but gorgeously animated in the old style and with an interesting Christian message. Worth watching.

Thanks for that great cartoon! They don’t make them like that anymore! May there be peace on earth!
 
Later on, they did a remake of that cartoon, updated to take into account the shadow of the atom bomb.
