Was anyone intrigued by the pectoral cross of Pope Francis?

Some news sources revealed it is the same pectoral cross he has always worn as a bishop.

I was lucky enough to find a couple of close-zoom frames in a video about this morning’s visit to pay homage to Our Lady.

The structure is very simple and sober. We see the Good Shepherd carrying on His shoulders the lost sheep. Behind him is the flock. On top, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.

On the very top is some heavenly figure, but I can’t quite tell who it may be.

I can’t make it out, but if you have Jesus and the Dove (Holy Spirit), perhaps it is God the Father in some form or other.

It lacks a proper Papal dignity.
Papal dignity came out of the Christianized Roman Empire age of the Church (starting with Emperor St Constantine the Great’s proclamation). I highly doubt that Pope St Peter had the so-called “papal dignity” of the post-Nicene Church. 😉

I’d like a small version of that to wear on a chain inside my shirt. Does anyone know where such a cross might be sold?
Give it time. I’m sure we’ll see it in the shops soon enough. I’d never heard of such a thing as a St Benedict crucifix before Benedict XVI’s election in 2005, then all of a sudden they were everywhere. 🙂

Now I’m intrigued. Someone please find out what the figure is.:o

BTW, the Papal Crucifix is already available for sale in the US.

Thanks for this. I think he simply chose not to discard his humble “old” cross in favor of a new, shiny one :o Who knows how many tears he shed while holding it in his hands…

I think Pope Francis, through the Franciscan pauperitas joined with the Ignatian charism (combat corruption of the faith, do mission work, preach and teach - thanks Br. Jay FFV), will remind everyone that the dignity of that which the Church Fathers called the Apostolic See, the See of Rome, that presides in charity, no longer requires the Vicar of Christ to look like an emperor amidst emperors, a king amidst kings, but rather needs to reflect the utter simplicity of he who, being aware of his authority - one that is not his own but bestowed from high above - can humble himself without any decrease whatsoever in the dignity of the office, and (with great joy for our Eastern brethren) that the Petrine primacy of the Church of Rome is not a conciliar conclusion and work of human hands, but an ancient tradition and an expression of the will of the Father, that has always moved Christianity to the thought: digitus Dei est hic!

Very intriguing cross, I do like it. From the descriptions of it, it fits his personality and way of doing things.

Viva La Papa!

It lacks a proper Papal dignity.
Hah, why are so many people trying to tell the Pope what he should do?!?!?!?!

Gues what? He’s the Pope. He gets to define for us! Instead of criticising maybe we could search for his reason and then apply that to our own lives!

Seriously, this Pope is going to do wonders to/for the “Pharisees” of our day.

And that is why I am so overwhelmed with joy about the choice of our Holy Father 🙂

Truly, I feel like I am watching a miracle unfold in front of my eyes.

No where in my post am I “telling” His Holiness what He should be doing.

I would recommend a wiki search on ‘straw man’ fallacy.

On the funny side, this comment reminds me of an anecdote, I think from Pope John XXIII, which read that he once asked the priest by his side on deathbed to give him the Apostolic benediction…according to the story I read, the priest humbly replied: “I am not authorized to do so”, and the Pope smiled and said: “but if I am telling you, then I guess you are, right?” 😃

(Larger here).

Honestly, their pectoral crosses all look very simple and sober. The one the Pope is wearing neither looks much more conspicuous, nor looks extremely dismissed. It looks like a pectoral cross. 🤷

Also, the statements of Pope Francis on the need to preach the Crucified Christ emphasize his deep love for the Cross:
When we journey without the Cross, when we build without the Cross, when we profess Christ without the Cross, we are not disciples of the Lord. …] My wish is that all of us, after these days of grace, will have the courage, yes, the courage, to walk in the presence of the Lord, with the Lord’s Cross; to build the Church on the Lord’s blood which was poured out on the Cross; and to profess the one glory: Christ crucified. And in this way, the Church will go forward.
Just one last comment…looking at this cross with a representation of the Good Shepherd carrying the lost sheep on his shoulders, this comes to mind:
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.

Anyone figure out what is at the top of the present Holy Father’s Pectoral Cross?

Hypothetically speaking of course…and way, way out there of course…(and I do not expect an answer to this very hypothetical question.)

Would Pope Francis have the authority to move the chair of Peter to Jerusalem, and also in effect bring to a close the temporal sovereignty of the Vatican City State? At the same time, Pope Emeritus Benedict, or the President of the Bishop’s Conference would become the Archbishop of Rome proper, or of Italy proper?

I would imagine so. The Popes moved to Avignon (and back, obviously)…

I would say Cardinal of Rome. Benedict has “retired”, so I imagine that it would be someone else.

There are the three original Patriarchal Sees: Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch.
The Seven Ecumenical Councils established the Pentarchy: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem.

The Bishop of Rome, affectionately called Pope (Papa), could dwell in Jerusalem but can’t take over the See of Jerusalem. St Peter established his See in Rome and handed it to his successors. No matter where they may live, they are Bishop of Rome.

I would say Cardinal of Rome.
There is no such thing as a “Cardinal of Rome” … There is a Bishop of Rome who normally names a Vicar for Rome who is de-facto, though not de jure, effectively the Ordinary for the Diocese of Rome and who is normally a Cardinal. The de-jure Ordinary is, of course the Bishop of Rome who does take precedence over his vicar.

Thank you. Would all that not change if, as the poster whose post I was responding to, the Pope moved the See to Jerusalem? :o
