Under very specific conditions a priests may be granted the right to wear a pectoral cross. This is mostly seen in the Eastern Catholic Churches. All Russian Catholic priests wear them. Priests of the Byzantine Rite who are given the rank of stavrophore (cross bearing) wear them as do archimandrites.

I do not know of any permission for Latin Rite priests to wear a pectoral cross.

I saw the following ad in Ebay
cgi.ebay.ca/Amazing-Preist-Deacon-Pectoral-Chalice-Cross-Crucifix_W0QQitemZ110114475488QQihZ001QQcategoryZ35813QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and it said that Priests could wear the Pectoral Cross. I found this odd and so I searched it out on Newadvent.org It didn’t say a lot about Priests who could wear it but I am wondering if any of you have ever seen a Priest wear it?

Also any more info on this would be appreciated.
Well, Orthodox and, I presume, Eastern Rite priests wear a pectoral cross. But I’ve never seen a Deacon with one. Hmm. Maybe the eBay ad is just an attempt at good - if slightly inaccurate - marketing?!

(Very beautiful cross, too, btw.)

Oops. I see Deacon Ed beat me to the “Submit Reply” button by a couple of minutes - and he answered more fully, too.

:o

BTW, at Russian Orthodox monasteries, the only way to distinguish a priest-monk from a “regular” monk - i.e. to determine from whom to ask a blessing - is by the pectoral cross they wear.

It’s interesting - a lot of nuns used to (and I’m sure some still do) wear them (at least at the schools I went to - although they were very plain in style unlike the pectoral crosses that Latin rite bishops wear).

I wonder why not priests?
