I have yet another problem I’m hoping everyone can help me with 🙂 .
I now go to confession, and am fasting regularly, however, they are not challenging. That might be the wrong word. I don’t feel fasting is bringing me closer to God. Are there any other ways of showing penance, such as shaving the head to learn humility (I’ve heard of some people doing this in the past). Are we even supposed to make our own penance up or should it be decided by a priest?

Thanks in advance and God bless

Peter

I also found fasting from food insufficient. I mean, I got used to it to where it didn’t feel sacrificial.

How about dressing down on Fridays? I wear a white shirt and black pants on those days.

Instead of dress shoes how about sandals?

How about ‘fasting’ from TV, radio and other media and instead observe silence on certain days?

Just some ideas.

For me the best penance (translated from “metanoia” meaning ‘reversal of direction’) are those very ordinary things that can occur in a very ordinary day. I love mashed potatoes, so I may go without or just a small serve instead of the large serve that appeals. I love black coffee with suger - I may cut out the sugar, or put milk in my coffee (oh yuk!) Such things as these in a very ordinary day, I find teach me to say “No” to myself and I am reversing my direction from self indulgence to going against self - although not consistently enough.

I have been told that you should consult with a spiritual director but here are some ideas:

Sleep on the floor, especially a hard wood floor.
When you eat, eat things that you don’t like: like maybe liver.

What does your fast consist of? One meal & two small ones a day as the Church teachers? Or is it just bread & water? Or maybe no solid food at all?

How about more prayer time…mortification of time? Here is a web site that might give you some useful ideas…👍

Used to be one meal and two small meals, no meat, fish, no animal products, no alcohol, etc. I just don’t feel like its ‘‘enough’’. I’m thinking to trying the Black Fast but I’m wondering if thats still allowed by the Church.

Thanks stove I’ll give the floor a try, as for eating something I don’t like, that could be difficult, off the top of my head the only thing I can think off is Brussel sprouts, and that might be more of a punishment for everyone around me if my entire diet consists of them 😛 .

you might want to spend time reflecting and praying about the nature and purpose of penance, which is not necessarily about “feeling” closer to God. In fact, the whole feelings thing can be very misleading as they are not a reliable indicator of spiritual state or progress. We must be prepared for long periods of times when God works strongly in us, but we detect nothing, feeling dry and empty, because he allows no emotion or consolation because He is maturing us.

The purpose of penitential practices, and offering up un-sought for sufferings is one of them, is to induce humility–that is, true self-knowledge and perception of oneself as God sees one, and true perception of one’s relationship with God. The mother of humility is obedience so it is very wise to ordinarily choose the standard penitential practices dictated by the Church in her wisdom, tested through centuries of the witness of the saints. Nothing extreme outside these traditions should be attempted without permission of one’s spiritual director or confessor, because of the very real danger of spiritual pride, esp. in taking on a practice that others can observe.

Another purpose of penance is contrition for sin (one time where a public penitential act may be apppropriate such as with catechumens during Lent), atonement for sin, uniting with the sufferings of Christ in His passion, combatting vice and sinful habits or temptations, and purification from sinful tendencies.

A third reason for penance is voluntarily adopting solidarity with the poor–the materially, spiritually, psychologically and emotionally poor–including purification of attitudes about them (purity of heart a la the beatitudes) and ability to see Christ in the poor.

A good guide for someone looking for a “challenge” in penance is St. Therese’s Little Way, doing small things with great love.

Prayer, fasting (penance) and alms-giving (acts of charity) are a tripod, one is out of balance without all three which is why we emphasize all 3 esp. during Lent.

The Eastern Church has retained more severe fasting disciplines and since they are well within tradition you might want to see where they are discussed on that forum, as there is certainly no reason you cannot adopt them, but doing so will be of limited benefit without prayer and reflection on your attitude about fasting and your reasons for doing so.

with regard to finding a spiritual director, joining a secular association, third order, oblates, Opus Dei, society of penitents, or something similar and conforming to their spirituality is a good way of putting oneself under direction, because there is a rule involved for lay persons in so doing.

A thing to remember about fasting and other penances. Our bodies are Temples of the Holy Spirit, and not to be damaged. You really need to talk it out with both a Spiritual Director AND with your Physician before undertaking the more severe fasts.

The Church itself neither allows nor disallows the Black Fast. Up to you. But please respect the body that God gave you.

What is a Black Fast? I never heard the term.
You are not the only one!

I personally thought Penance was what a Priest gave you for your sins, not something that you come up with. Seems like something that really needs to be discussed with your Priest or Spiritual Director…

How about reaching out to someone you have not spoken to in a while, or apologizing to someone who you have hurt in the past? Or doing an act of charity that you might not have considered? (like maybe volunteering at a hospital, in particular witnessing to those who are dying, or in a children’s burn unit) I plan on volunteering this year in something like this, because I think for me, anyways, all too often, my sins seem to revolve around a distorted sense of self–where I am the object of my world. I would like to think I have come a long way in my faith, but when I’m on my knees–I am reminded that I’m still quite centered on self, even still. In a faraway place in my own mind, I still dwell on self. :o Giving myself away to another in such a situation as I list above, will force me past myself. I have been told that I’m giving, but I think there are so many limitations I place on myself.

Just some thoughts that I’m throwing your way for potential penances. I wouldn’t discount your fasting as being truly humbling, even if you are feeling that it isn’t so sacrificing anymore. The beauty of that is that your penance are becoming more of a way of life…perhaps that is what penances are supposed to do for us–cause us to make them a part of ourselves as opposed to something ‘unusual’ or ‘separate’ from our everyday living. 🙂

We cannot do anything that impresses God.

Instead of sleeping on hard floors and keeping a diet like the Prophet Ezekiel (cf Ezek. 4:1-11); just be truly repentant for your sins and get back up after you fall. Following Christ doesn’t have to be all we make it out to be.

Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Matthew 11: 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Sounds like a vegan. Lots of folks are vegans.
Yes but the black fast entails that only one meal is eaten. From what I know about vegan diets they have to keep ‘‘grazing’’ as most vegetables are quite low in calories, which means they don’t provide as much energy. Done the vegan thing as part of abstinence, no big deal.
