At my last confession the priest asked me to fast food one day a friend of mine who is a priest has told me about a jewish way is to eat something before the sun comes up and after the sun goes down. Would that still be fulfilling the penance of eating no food for one day? thanks in advance

Ideally, you would use the definition of fast for Australian Catholics.

I have previously heard that it is two snack meals, and a small main meal, however I can’t find that on-line.

US Catholics have this [USCCB]…

Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts?

A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.

Australian Catholics might use this [Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn]:

Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under 60 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, which means to have smaller meals during the day.
.
I would go with the US definition, as it seems a bit stricter and closer to what I have traditionally heard in Australia.

I would do that but the priest said to have no food at all so not sure if I would be fulfilling the penance

I would interpret the penance as a canonical day, which is a 24-hour period from midnight to midnight. That is the time frame used to define the required fast days in canon law.

Then please do as the priest said unless you have a medical condition that would make that dangerous.

Or ask the priest quite what he means by one day if you are unclear. We always think of these things after leaving the confession…😃 But it is quite okay to ask the priest for clarification

The penance would be according the intent of the confessor. One may seek clarification from the confessor.
