Penance Question

I was curious about penance and confession (yes, it’s another confession question.)

So here’s a situation:
I received X number of prayers as penance for the sins I have committed. Not only did I pray the prescribed number of prayers, but I also prayed a different prayer of the same amount.

Is it okay of me to do this? Should I have done more to show my contrition?

It was absolutely OK. With every prayer you say for penance, your time in purgatory is reduced.

One can never do enough penance as far as I’m concerned. But the important thing, though, is that u really do make a firm resolution (and ask for God’s grace) to turn away from those particular sins you’ve committed.

Are you doing it to make sure you are contrite or that you’re forgiven? Remember, we are forgiven already. Make sure you aren’t adding prayers because you think you should receive more punishment than that the priest gave you; I mean, make sure you aren’t doing more prayers to punish yourself, so that you can forgive yourself. Our forgiveness isn’t bigger than His.

But I think more prayers, no matter when, are always good.

What happen was that as I was praying my penance prayers when I accidentally added another prayer by accident. I continued with my penance prayers while praying the other prayer as well, thinking nothing of it. I wasn’t trying to punish myself by praying more. Rather, I thought I was being sincere in my praying.
