What’s the difference (if any) between penance and mortification?

Briefly, penance is paying what is due for our sins. Mortification is self-control of the flesh. As an aside, Fr. John Bartunek’s conversion story may be viewed here:

Penance is the after and mortification is the prevention when it comes to sin.

Penance is in reparation for sins committed while mortifications help in strengthening the will to choose to do the right thing and avoid sin.

Thanks all, enlightening. Do both penance and mortification give indulgence?
