Do non-catholic Christians perform acts of penanc in reparation for their sins and those ob others?

I don’t perform any singular act of penance for a particular sin. I look at it more holistically that I am a sinner and should always be looking to serve my GOD. This includes sponsoring children in Africa, working in a soup kitchen periodically, visiting with the sick who cannot attend church, partnering with Catholic Charities and painting rooms where battered women and children are living etc. etc. No action that I take could ever pay the price for a sin I commit. Only the blood of Christ can do this. But I can glorify our GOD and my faith through the works that GOD has prepared for me to do.

Remember that Penance is also about showing humility, submission to the Lord, and sorrow for your sins. While we are to perform an act of Penance to complete a Confession, we are asked to BE penitential as a matter of Christian life, in other words to recognize our sinful character and show our subservience to and dependence upon the Saving Work of Christ.

In other words, we should not just pray “Lord, thanks for forgiving me for this particular sin as well as all the others I’ve committed and given to you on the Cross” but also “Lord, have mercy for I am a sinner.” Penance, then, also reminds us of our proper relationship to our Savior.

May I suggeat that you read “Come Be My Light” a book that reveals her 55 year long “Dark Night” of her soul and her complete emptying of self with no “feelings” of consolation But with an iron will to bring Christ into the “dark holes of the Poor”.It is a book that has more ptofoundly affected me than any other I have ever read.The pages of the book are stained with my tears of Joy,sadness and profoud gratitude to God for allowing me to live in the same era as His incredible Saint cast in the terrifying crucible of his Love.
