If you are given a pennance that will take some time to complete (read a book and some other booklets) are you allowed to take Communion before you complete the pennance?
I would think that if you received absolution then yes, you may proceed to Holy Communion before the penance is complete, especially if you are required to do a penance over time, like reading. The main thing is that you were absolved of any mortal sins. I am not a priest, so this is just my reasoned guess…
Maybe one of these days I’ll learn how to spell penance. Perhaps a spelling course should be a penance. Anyway…I read that completing our penance allows for a certian removal of the temporal effects of sin, though the sin is already absolved. In this case I don’t see anything wrong with reception of Holy Communion. This is a first experience for me; I’ve never had a penance that might take a day or two.
It is my understanding that the sin is forgiven when the priest pronounces absolution; so you are free to receive Communion.
The penance should be completed as soon as reasonable. If it has not been completed by the next time you go to Confession, mention the fact in that Confession.
