Is it required to recite the confiteor in the ordinary form of the mass? I just got back from the youth mass after leading a retreat for the high schoolers. The priest instead of reciting the confiteor simply said “let us call to mind now, what separates us from God.” after a moment of silence he went right into the “lord have mercy…” and the gloria. I’ve never hard the mass without the confiteor, was this ok? In any case, tonight was the last time I’ll attend mass with said priest. His chalice was terra-cotta, he had lay ministers pour consecrated wine into numerous communion cups, there were far too many praise and worship songs that were admittedly distracting… to top it all off at the sign of peace, it wasn’t the usual “let us now offer one another a sign of peace” instead it was “share the love” and a free for all ensued. Not exactly my cup of tea. Am i being too picky? Or was there sufficient reason for me to be upset? It bothered me the whole time. I had a hard time thinking of much else…

No. There are options.

I wish more priest would use the confiteor more often, I think it is the best part of the opening liturgy (especially when you strike your chest, which I am always the only person who does it)

But there are options.

however, the chalice should be a durable metal and not terra cota. And frankly, I never understood praise and worship songs during Mass, they are good for prayer services and other events, but to me they destroy the atmosphere that a Mass should have, but if that is what the people want, I guess you need to bow down to it.

Going directly to the “Lord have mercy” is one of the allowed options for the penitential rite.

However, a terra cotta chalice, and pouring of the precious blood are serious abuses. I would write to the bishop.

God Bless
