Are we supposed to be saying the Penitential Rite (I confess to almighty God…) at each mass on Sundays. I’ve noticed we have not been doing it at our Church.
Yes, it is suppose to be said every Sunday and Holy Day. Unfortunately, there are far too many who do not abide by this rule. If this is not being said on a regular basis at your Church, I would bring it up to the pastor. Are we supposed to be saying the Penitential Rite (I confess to almighty God…) at each mass on Sundays. Yes, it is supposed to be said at all Masses. But there are three options and only one starts with “I confess to Almighty God…” The other two blend the confession of sin with the Kyrie and one is almost free form. Are we supposed to be saying the Penitential Rite (I confess to almighty God…) at each mass on Sundays. The confiteor (‘I confess’ version) isn’t required to be said at any time. The Creed and Gloria are required on Sundays and Holy Days.Yes, it is suppose to be said every Sunday and Holy Day. Yes and no. If the Mass starts with the Asperges - the priest goes throughout the congregation sprinkling them with holy water - the beginning is a bit different.Yes, it is supposed to be said at all Masses. I forgot about the Asperges. I haven’t seen Mass done with one for at least 20 years other than Easter Vigil.Yes and no. If the Mass starts with the Asperges - the priest goes throughout the congregation sprinkling them with holy water - the beginning is a bit different.
Excuse me! I have very familiar with the parts of the Mass. I am the one who mentioned the options. I always am at Mass early and read the readings ahead of time. Luckily, I am in a parish that still has missals since many around here do not.and by the way, it appears that you are not familiar with all of the parts of the Mass, including where there may be options. If you show up 5 or 10 minutes early and look through a missalette, you will be able to sort out these options. It is also a good time to read the Old and New Testament readings; going over them before Mass can help focus while hearing them at Mass
Form C of the Penitential Rite incorporates the Kyrie:
It’s those “improvised prayers” that make it seem free form. Even if you are trying to follow along in your missal, you can’t always be sure. And I have heard some interesting improvisation.Priest: [A short improvised prayer is said followed by] Lord have mercy.
People: Lord have mercy.
Priest: [A second short improvised prayer, followed by] Christ have mercy.
People: Christ have mercy.
