Pentecost Extended Vigil

Did your parish use the extended form of the Vigil Mass for Pentecost?

I didn’t go to my parish’s Pentecost Vigil tonight—because I’m the lector tomorrow at 7pm—so I don’t know what my parish did.

I answered no. But then, I wouldn’t be entirely sure either seeing as I have only returned back this January. We had three baptisms. No choir. And mass ended at 6pm like normal on Saturday evenings. So I am assuming no.

We didn’t even use the Vigil readings or the Sequence. This is difficult for me because as a trained liturgist I have to realize that the priests are still in control of the mass in the parish, even though they aren’t doing what they should be. When I questioned the presider why he was not using the vigil readings he said he liked the ones for the day better. Why not the sequence…the priests think it takes too much time and no one knows it. Just part of my frustration being a parish liturgist sometimes.

We didn’t use the Pentecost Vigil at all and the priest said that if the Sequence isn’t sung it isn’t used – I was under the impression that the Easter and Pentecost Vigils were not optional but I must admit that in 13 years here I’ve never heard them said/sung.

I think this will be made clearer with the upcoming Missal. In fact I believe they are expanding the Pentecost Vigil and adding one for Epiphany and one other, which may be Ascension.

Mine did.
But then my pastor is also the director of Divine Liturgy for our archdiocese. It thru me for a moment but then I was able to settle in and just enter into it all.

I hear you, Joanm. I think there is some confusion about the actual Pentecost vigil. It’s not that we proclaim all four Old Testament readings; rather, we choose from one of four options.

Good point, Joannm. Yes, the revised Missal makes clear that the extended form of the Pentecost vigil adds four old testament readings to the Mass before the Gloria, resulting in a total of six. There are also vigils for the Epiphany, Ascension, Assumption, and I think a couple of others, though these are not extended in the same way.
