Hello Catholic Church music and liturgy directors. i amthe music director for the first year in a parish. I have been preparing to sing the Pentecost Sequence in English (have practiced this for months with another musician). It was my plan to begin with the choir singing the words “Veni Sancte Spiritus” and then have the congregation respond the same. Then two verses of the sequence would be sung in the chant style as written and then the response Veni Sancte Spiritus would be sung again. That would follow as two more verses, then response etc.,until the end of the sequence and “Amen, Alleluia” would be sung.
The Veni Sancte Spiritus response would be sung in the same key as the Sequence is sung.
I seek your Feedback. Is the above plan acceptable? What do you think? In the past I’ve heard this done many different ways, but I love the ancient words and chant melodies. My idea of the responses is to provide the congregation’s participation in the Sequence. I also have prepared a insert that has the words of the sequence and it shows the appropriate places for response. I prepared the the insert because the missalette is hard to follow.
It is also my plan to briefly explain about the Sequence, its antiquity, and how it will be sung before the Mass begins.
