For Mass on Pentecost Sunday, was the Sequence sung or recited?

The Sequence can either be said or sung. In my parish, it was beautifully sung by our organist today.

We (the congregation) sang it, led by the cantor and accompanied by organ and choir. (This choir is small and would hardly be noticed except that they sing harmony while the rest of us sing the main part.)

We have no cantor. Small country parish that we are, the reader recited it.

Omitted.

The last time we had it in my parish was when I was reading, about 10 years ago.

Now I’d nearly forgotten that it’s even there.

Is it optional?

Last year my pastor even asked me to have the Corpus Christi Sequence sung in Spanish.
That was hard to find. Found the text, but had to write the music for it.

I don’t think the Pentecost sequence (Veni Sancte Spiritus) is optional (it doesn’t mention it being optional in the Missallettes my parish uses, which explicitly state that the Corpus Christi sequence is optional). Besides, it’s one of the most beautiful prayers to the Holy Spirit ever composed (along with the Great Novena to the Holy Ghost and Veni Creator Spiritus).

Regardless, it was sung at my parish, at least at the Mass I went to (my parish has 7 weekend Masses, each with a different choir and music leader). Which is good, because like the responsorial psalms, even though it is permitted to recite the sequence, it seems more proper to sing it - as it is, at its core, a hymn.

We were in a neighboring diocese’s cathedral today. The Cathedtal of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. Full choir, organ, and strings. Simply amazing.

It was omitted at my parish as well. I can’t definitively remember it ever having been sung or recited at the three parishes I’ve been a member of. It can remember 100% that it wasn’t done this year or last year.

The youth doing the youth Mass weren’t prepared to sing it, so we simply recited the Sequence. Love the diction used in the Sequence.

Did you attend the vigil on Saturday evening or mass on Sunday? It is not part of the vigil.

Sung by the cantor and the congregation sang “Veni Sancte Spiritus” after every 2 verses.

Sung. I attended the Solemn Mass in my Parish at 9:30 am. It was sung by the lector in Filipino, since that Mass was in Filipino.

Halina Espiritu,
sa sinag na buhat sa’ yo
kami’y liwanagan mo…

It was sung beautifully, in my opinion.
