Because we are exposed to many substances, compounds, chemicals (voluntarily or involuntarily) that interfere with the normal gestation and development of the fetus.

There many medicaments that are known to produce this type of malformations and they normally state in the literature that they should not be taken when there is the suspect of pregnancy.
Also chemicals present in the drinking water or in the soils can have this effects.
Many a time the presence of these contaminants is the direct result of unscrupulous human activity.

Yes… But Theologically speaking…

Do you imagine what kind of social lives do such persons have?

What do you mean in terms of linking theology with “social lives?”
What is the purpose of those people then?

Every person is meant to be social as we live in societies (communities/communion).

So coming up as deformed can harm a person very much spirituality (depression and all sort of negative stuff) … (Edited)They will not be able to do things of compassion other normal people do or inter-relate the way other people do.

How will they look at the Resurrection (aren’t they resurrecting with the same body?)

What is your suggestion?

No at the resurrection we will all have “glorified bodies” that is without the effects of the decayed world we live in. So a person that lost limbs due to sickness will have a complete perfected body that will not age and decay like our present ones.
Also there will be no old people. All will be at their prime perfect age.
As for your previous question, those that are born with defects are a test for our faith. How do we view them?
This was asked of mother Theresa of Calcutta. What did she see in the many rejects of that city’s slums. She replied “I see Jesus”.

JerryZ,

I don’t think that seing Jesus in them(a suffering prototype) will make them feel any better.

You can make them feel better if you treat them as fellow human beings with dignity and worth. How they feel then it is up with them. I have seen people with severe malformations that did not allow that to define who they were.

I am sure there are others.

USCCB's NABRE 1 Colossians 1:24:
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking* in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church,
  • [1:24] What is lacking: although variously interpreted, this phrase does not imply that Christ’s atoning death on the cross was defective. It may refer to the apocalyptic concept of a quota of “messianic woes” to be endured before the end comes; cf. Mk 13:8, 19–20, 24 and the note on Mt 23:29–32. Others suggest that Paul’s mystical unity with Christ allowed him to call his own sufferings the afflictions of Christ.

It seems to me the body of Christ must suffer everything there is to suffer before the end will come (cf. Revelation 6:10 and note how it’s been 2000 years and we seem to have novel sufferings being invented, such as the atomic bomb), that God calls upon people to add unique sufferings to Jesus’ Sacrifice (through spiritual communion during reception of the Eucharist) that Jesus didn’t experience 2,000 years ago. Hence these people are being given a special role to play in the drama of salvation.

Then again, perhaps the reverse is true and I’m wrong, because there’s also Hebrews 4:15:
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.
But perhaps God is talking here about a different sort of testing, or testing in general (in categories like knowledge, faithfulness). The Bible is hard to understand. So many books and so much historical context. 😦

Our natural human bodies are subject to the law of entropy; this includes the DNA that governs the external form.

It doesn’t really matter if the damage occurs as a result of birth defect, or during the course of living life.

Our society has made matters worse by exposing the unborn, historically, to things such as thalidomide and radiation. Such was never in the will of God.

Although you have zeroed in on instances where there are added extremities or body surfaces, such deformations are not as bad as it gets. Surgical procedures are expensive, but such additional body surfaces can be removed.

Birth defects in the other direction, where hands or legs are missing, would be more tragic. Extra limbs can be removed; limbs that never formed cannot be added.

THIS^ bold emphasis mine.

OP, you sound like a troll. Some of your comments came across as cruel and inflaming. Just telling you for your own good, just in case you are not a troll.

The worst form of deformation is not of the body but of the soul.

the bolded statement is what I find offensive… You might not have meant it, but I can only imagine the hurt it inflicted if someone who has the same malady you mentioned read it.

Anyway, you use ideas here that are not from the Bible. They are from modern day thought and ‘science’. Our purpose here is not to procreate, our purpose here is to serve God- first lesson of the Catechism. Our purpose is not to socialize, though we do need each other. Our purpose is to serve God and those who cannot adequately do so physically because of malformation, etc… do so in other ways. God has his purposes and reasons for everything… sometimes we figure it out, sometimes we don’t.

Why are there some people who are born with no nose, 2 faces, 2 vaginas, 3 testicles, 3 breasts, 4 arms, 4 arms/4legs , 2 penises?
THis is just too strange for me to make much of a comment, other than noting the generally offensive nature of this thread, especially the “what is the purpose of these people” question.

People born with deformities are a challenge to bring out Christ-like compassion in others. God’s love is the greatest power in the world. It needs to flow through us out to others.

There are people who miss a member or two, nevertheless, I don’t think medicine was always as advanced as to do such procedures as removing the extras.

CaptainRick, AnneElizabeth, and everyone

I am sorry if I offended you, this was not my intention, I did not meant that as any offence to such people. Actually it kind of makes me sad to know there are people like that. By definition I am a humanist person, I hope for the greater good of all people, and believe in human rights. I have seen quite a few, bad and negative aspects of life I come from an impoverished country, where depression is normal. There are quite a few people who live in inhuman conditions there, who have tough lives, etc. I am kind of depressed and questioning God lately and the fairness of life, etc. That’s why I opened this thread.

People don’t need mercy, they need greater things than mercy, like dignified existence .

In many cases pity only makes one feel worse.

It’s part of life… Those actual people with all those anomalies exists. I saw an article about them a few weeks ago , with pictures, names, etc… I can’t find it anymore though…

The purpose of these people is the same as ANY person. The purpose of life is not to be social, the purpose of life is about God! Their purpose is to know, love and serve God in this world and to live with him in happiness forever in Heaven after death. God bless.
Social in the same way as human interaction/interrelation… Afaik, people are meant to live in communion and are saved in communion… That is why the church as an assembly exists. And that is why salvation is not individualistic(or perhaps that is just EO teaching? I doubt).

I don’t see being compassionate and helpful in some way as pity.
