Todd Easton:
In 2 Maccabees 15:12-14, in a vision worthy of belief, the dead priest Onias and dead prophet Jeremiah were seen fervently praying for the whole Jewish community.
This is really a good example only the Protestants don’t have the books of Maccabees in their Bibles. Annunciata:)

Did you show her the Bible verses? She still doesn’t think those in heaven are worried about what is going on in earth? I guess all that is left is to pray for a seed of understanding to grow.
God Bless,
Maria

Why does your MIL believe that the Saints cannot hear the prayers of us on earth? Are they not more alive than we are? Are they not more perfect in charity than we are?

She really could not explain her position well, but she was adament that there is no communication between the souls in Heaven and the people on Earth. Yes, she agrees they are “alive”, but not in the sense that they would be able to “hear” someone talking to them from Earth. Also, she stated to usual protestant belief that you only need to take your prayers to God, not to anyone else.
In other words, she’s not ready to admit (and don’t try to force the issue) that the Catholic position is not unreasonable or irrational. All you need to do is state the case clearly and back off. Enough little grains of truth, and sooner or later the sandbag will weigh enough that she has to deal with it. She may never say, “Wow! I was wrong; the Catholic Church is right! Here I come!” But if all you do is soften her heart and show her that the Church is not the monster she believes it to be, you will have accomplished much.
