Hi Everyone,

I was recently told by an acquaintance who visited the holy land that, people there are divided between catholics, and ortohdox> Which I obviously know.

BUT what shocked me was another thing she said, which was that in the holy land, Jerusalem etc, people of different religions are expected to, and need to step aside when, Orthodox Christians are nearby and make place for them to walk on the streets.

IS this true? I have no idea, as it sounds a little strange. I’m looking out for opinions and facts here, as I do not know where else to look for a clarification on this. I would only like to know if this is true, or if this person told me rubbish, that is all.

Please advise,
Thanks,
Lucien

It’s hard to say without context. The first thing that came to mind is what your friend might have observed is one of the periodic processions through the streets of the Old City in Jerusalem, most often from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchial HQ to the Holy Sepulchre, sometimes preceded by men with ceremonial sticks which they hit on the ground to alert people. The Latin Patriarchate (Catholic) also has these – and yes, people have to move out of the way for them else the processions wouldn’t get to where they have to go.
