How can I learn to respect a person who has a distorted view of reality? The temptation is to argue with them and show them they are wrong. Mental illness is rampant in my family. Someone I know is adamant people are manipulating her, abusing her, etc. I am not sure if I believe her. Her sense of self is not stable.

Mental illness is not a person’s fault … you need to realize that.

Every person has intrinsic dignity just by the fact that they are human.
CCC
1702 The divine image is present in every man. It shines forth in the communion of persons, in the likeness of the unity of the divine persons among themselves (cf. chapter two).
1703 Endowed with “a spiritual and immortal” soul,5 the human person is "the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake."6 From his conception, he is destined for eternal beatitude.
The Catechism states it here simply as, “The divine image is present in every man.” This, of course includes women:p. The intrinsic dignity of people is expounded upon throughout the CCC.

So that’s basically it. Everyone has to be seen as belonging to God. We are His possessions . You wouldn’t mess with someone else’s baby would you?

The phrase, “We are all God’s children” is so overused it has lost it’s meaning. So it helps me to imagine everyone as being a possession of Gods; and I do not want to mess with God’s most prized possessions. But, I still forget sometimes and my passions get the best of me.

I would be wary of trying to interpret their behavior. Who is to say it is not a mental problem?

Pray for her and try to respect her for persevering in a life that sounds so troubled. Mental illness is a terrible burden. If she is mentally ill, rationalizing with her isn’t likely to work. Try to accept her as she is.

When I first came back to the Church I used to pray daily for God to help me to accept others as they were, not as I thought they should be. And I did this for years before it finally sank in. Now I only pray for this once a week or so. It is an ongoing battle.

U need a similar world view 2 agree on. The bible based “truth project” is a basic biblical teaching to understanding the difference. Its on utube. Personal deception is normal in this world unless u are bible based and influenced by the holy spirit. The spirit of truth.
