I’m wondering the countries and periods of great Catholic martyrdom.

For example, there were the Romans from Christ’s death-about 300, a few American Indians when the Europeans came over, Mexicans in the 20s, Russians in the 40s (?), English in the 1500s.

If I’m wrong in the above, please correct me. Also, what are the others?

Thanks!

Martyrdom continues to this day, largely in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, but people are still dying for the faith, even in Christian countries such as in Latin America, or even in the United States.

Not all martyrdom occurs at the hand of government.

Google the “118 Martyrs of Vietnam.” I am on my cell or else I would post a link.

Thank you both for your responses! Any other information would be appreciated

If you do a Google search for Christian martyrs statistics you will find that the largest number of martyrs died in this past century.

A caution though that one doesn’t hastily consider this evidence of a trend. Population in the last century has absolutely exploded. I think it’d be very interesting to see if the % of martyrs has changed, and in what continents and countries. I would assume the Americas would be low and Asia and the Middle East would be rather high, comparatively.

I believe most of the martyr’s of the 20th century were primarily based in the Soviet Union, according to one of my priests.
