Re janitor/porter:

Originally these words meant the same thing, a door guard or warden. Janitor comes from Janus, the Roman god of doors and gates. A porter is one given charge of portals, or doors. One of the responsibilities of door guards is to hold the keys for all the doors under their jurisdiction. Since the cleaning and repair personnel in large buildings also have to have the keys to those places they have to clean and repair, they assumed for themselves the noble Roman title of Janitor which carried a great deal more dignity than mop jockey. Nowadays those two titles are synonymous.

St Peter, having been given by Jesus the authority of the keys in Heaven and on Earth, has in times past sometimes been called the Janitor of Heaven. This title is not used much any more, except by cruciverbalists and other triviaphiles such as yours truly. With this, I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion about Permanent Deacons.
