I can not tell you how many times seeing bare, uncovered, immodest elbows has lead me to sin. Shame on those who leave them uncovered. It’s a horrible temptation for us guys.

Anyways, where could this go? One day, the elbow, next day, the ankles!!! AHHH!!

I have only read page 1, but had to respond…

almost 1 year ago we moved to our present town, our small church has adoration first Friday every month.
I have never been able to go–it is always during a time when my husband is not home from work to stay with our two young children, and the two year old would definitely not have done well in the quiet adoration environment, and I do not know anyone to stay with them while I would go.

SO, this past Friday my husband was home, and I was able to go before some family came in from out of town. I went for about 30 minutes before going to get a few more groceries for our company.

As I walked into the church, I realized that I was in shorts and wondered if that was okay. If I had gone home to change I would not have had time to come back. (well, thank goodness I was in shorts, because the church was HOT with no a/c and a fan blowing).

I have been so happy and filled with peace since that Friday visit and today I asked Jesus to let me come again next month.
I don’t think He was upset I was in shorts. We had a great visit.

During two weekend retreats, not recent, there was all night adoration, and you could sign up for an hour during the night. You would wake, go, and then go back to bed. It was down the hall. THis will probably irk some people, but going to visit with Jesus in my pajamas was great–I really felt like I could then come anytime, however I was, and it was nice.

I like going to Adoration.

I was told before going to the Middle East that I would have to keep my ankles and elbows covered. That may be true in Saudi Arabia, but not in all Middle Eastern countries. I did have a student who saw baring elbows as harim(sinful) even as she complained and suffered from the heat. There are medieval saints who lifted up Muslim dress as the ideal for Christians as well. Even in the heat, Shia women wear black abayas which absorb heat while the men walk around in their white trobes.

i sort of get the idea that a lot of people here are missing the point of adoration all together…i KNOW that when i go in my shorts, t-shirt and birkenstocks, JESUS is HAPPY that i’m there to praise him, adore him, talk with him and be present in Him. i don’t think he would say to me “you can be present, just go home first and change those birkenstocks”…

You make a good point but if we are prepared to go to mass, not running late or unforeseen events, we should dress with pants and a shirt. Traditionally most families have done that for years. Maybe some are tired of hearing about the Vatican dress code, but lets look at the reason for it. Why is the Vatican saying when you enter St Peters to cover the legs and arms?

Whats wrong with the legs or arms? I think it is because some women wear not just shorts but super tight short shorts and men will wear tank tops. Maybe the Vatican sees that as distractive to both genders and/or disrespectful dress. For what other reason do they want you to cover yourself? Basically they are “on to something” and I don’t mind following their lead because it makes sense.

Can you go before the Lord in whatever state of dress you are in? Probably. The issue though comes down to , consciously, what the best way to present yourself at mass.

Adoration, unless part of a Holy Hour, is a time of private devotion whereas Mass is communal. Adoration is about personal intimacy, so I would expect individuals might be more casually dressed than when preparing themselves for Mass. Of course, I would take off the Birkenstocks.

Well said! Today, after work, I happily went to adoration (even though it was on my way home from work and I was sweaty, dirty and had steel-toed work boots on). On Wednesdays, at 3:00 pm, whoever happens to be there prays the Divine Mercy Chaplet. I looked forward to it all day while I was labouring in the heat. If I had gone home to change and be more “appropriate”, I would have missed it.

You know, I think some people just lie in wait for ways to be offended and scandalized…just so they have something to gripe and moan about. I have found that there are actually some folks out there who aren’t happy unless they have something or someone to complain about and stir up trouble.

FYI- MY adoration experience may be different from others here- we have a private adoration chapel that is NOT part of mass, open 24/7 for the past 30 years~!!! we are the ‘keepers of the chapel’ once a week for an hour. there are about 70 volunteers in our city who volunteer 1 hr each per week for chapel ‘keeper’. so THAT is why i’m in shorts, t-shirt and birkies…

If you’re removing the Birkenstocks, it doesn’t matter anyway.
My overseas parish does not have Perpetual Adoration, but it is close. The compound closes at 9pm so the priests and religious can go to sleep, so Adoration runs from 8am until 8pm. Shoes must be removed before entering the Adoration Chapel. Most people do wear sandals in this desert country. There is a formal Holy Hour on First Fridays before the Obligation (Sunday) Mass that is led by one of the ministries or groups. Most people do dress modestly. There are also other events in which the Eucharist is exposed.
My stateside parish has First Friday Adoration following the noon Mass. The local nursing home has a Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

no offenses taken…i LOVE my birks, but i know a LOT of people don’t, including my own husband. drives him nuts, and i get a new pair every couple of years! on the other hand, my birks are probably more similar to jesus’ actual shoes than any pair of heels i could buy!!
