I’m not saying they are lying…but to hold it up as something people advocate for like it’s done all the time…well that is just a little over dramatic in my book…
You know, I see a huge lack of patience and understanding from those who just think that these things are not an issue. If you are lucky enough to be in a parish that these things don’t happen, you are blessed. But I think some prayers and understanding need to be sent to those who obviously do not have an ideal situation. I have lived and worked in many places. I have gone to literally hundreds of parishes in my life. Now I think there was a time when people used many excuses to “try out” different personal preferences of theology in the Mass and other arenas and I think that is being phased out. I know Seattle has a great Archbishop that was recently installed. And it is obvious that the namby pamby nonsense is a dying problem. But it still exists and like I said the Northwest will probably be the last to rid itself of the problem. I have been to amazing parishes in your diocese and some pretty bad ones as well. But I can assure you that if you are so blessed that you don’t experience the problems then maybe you should cut those who are pulling their hair out with frustration in other areas a little slack.

We had a priest at our diocese (currently on loan to another diocese) that told us to hold hands across the isle because horizontal worship is taking the place of vertical worship and we better get used to it. That was 7 years ago. He is teaching high school theology.

Again this will end with this generation and who knows what the problems of the next generation will bring but some of us would love to have the Masses that you obviously go to. Remember us in your prayers.

Folks, please don’t start questioning whether bare shoulders and shorts/skirts above the knees are inappropriate for Mass… Of course they are inappropriate. That’s elementary. Please do an internet search if you don’t believe me. It’s not only Popes JPII and B16 who have forbidden this stuff in Rome and in the Vatican. It’s not only Fr. Dominic Mary in a church in Alabama, and on EWTN’s televised Mass. We had bishops and priests from Texas, Louisiana, California, Oregon, Arkansas, Alabama in the USA, from Mexico, as well as Italy, France, Ireland, Croatia in Europe, several cities in the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka in Asia, in addition to Brisbane Australia, and even a priest from Africa, giving the same instructions - all available on the internet. NO BARE SHOULDERS IN CHURCH. NO SHORTS ALLOWED. NO SKIRTS ABOVE THE KNEES.

Folks, do we really have to play this game every single time? Do I really have to post twenty separate articles to the same effect, in addition to what the Vatican has already said and in addition to that youtube video from EWTN’s Mass?

Can we please get back to Perpetual Adoration, and Perpetual Adoration chapels? Are the same shorts, bare shoulders, and skirts above the knee, which have been CLEARLY FORBIDDEN AS CHURCH ATTIRE by our Popes and bishops, somehow still acceptable in the Adoration chapel?
If it’s such a huge deal, they should be instructing converts on it. Seriously. No one ever told me. A lot of the protestant churches I attended, even the pastor wears jeans to church. So I figured it was okay since no one said otherwise, and most people in our parish don’t dress up. (Could you maybe pm me some of those links so I could read them?) I don’t want to be disrespectful, I am honestly ignorant on this topic. 😊

It is not Church law. Some parishes are more traditional and stricter concerning how parishioners dress. Written and unwritten dress codes tend to be more relaxed during the week than on Sundays.
Most parishes do have a dress code for lectors and EMCHs. My overseas parish has a written dress code for weddings including no barebacks or sleeveless dresses.
You are always safe when wearing skirts that cover knees and shoulders.
Modesty is always encouraged.

I will have better patience when I ACTUALLY see anyone show up at Mass or Adoration in a bikini…to state that people have this “I can wear what I want-in a bikini type mentatility” just boarders on the ridicoulous! Can you honestly tell me that you have ever seen anyone show up for Mass in a bikini?

It’s one thing to say that people are like that about shorts or jeans…but really to equate to a bikini is still into the hysterics and I have no patience for it.

Jeans is a grey area…some people will tell you NO…and some people won’t. From the Vatican dress code it is ok…🤷 The biggest thing is modesty. Shorts can be to the knee or cut way way high…there is a variance. What is posted here is all opinion. You have to follow your own informed concience.

Sorry…couldnt help it but where do I get a skirt that covers both my knees and shoulders:D Would that be a burka?:D:D

Don’t show me 20 articles, just show me 1 infallible one. You do that, I will immediately eat crow and retract everything I have said before.

It depends upon the presence of those likely to be scandalized. The Biblical teaching:

Matthew 5:28 - On adultery through looking.

1 Cor. 8:1-13 - On the topic of avoiding scandal (we are our brother’s keeper). We should give up our personal freedoms that others are not scandalized.

1 Timothy 2:9 - On adoption of modest and decent dress.

You are right. It should read a skirt that covers knees and a top (blouse or shirt) that covers shoulders. Actually, I am less bothered by the length of a person’s clothing than some of the slogans on T-shirts. Who ever thought that words sprawled across the seat of pants would be flattering to anybody? Schools with dress codes generally use the fingertip measurement for length, especially when it comes to shorts. That seems reasonable.
A Burka covers from head to toe. Abayas cover shoulders to feet. A hajib covers the head while the nigib also covers the face. Jesus wore a trobe and shora. He also wore sandals. Did anybody have closed toes shoes back then?

I would probably start crying. And I would leave and cry at home.

It’s a sensitive issue. There are a lot of people, especially women and girls, who THINK they look really nice, and then someone comes along and disses them, and it’s like getting punched in the stomach. You just feel so ugly and worthless.

I remember 5th grade. My grandma had bought me a new pair of shoes, and I thought I was just so gorgeous. (They were Red Wings, size 10–look it up online and see just how attractive they look.)

When I got to school, quite a few girls started making fun of my shoes, and then the boys joined in.

There was nothing I could do. My grandma had bought them for me. I couldn’t throw them away–they were fairly expensive. And unlike many of the other girls, I didn’t HAVE another pair of shoes.

So I just had to wear them.

Haven’t any of you women ever dressed up nicely (at least you thought you looked nice and fashionable), and then when you got to school, boys barked at you in the hallway? Or have you ever been taking a walk feeling really pretty because you’re wearing something that you thought was cute and in style, and then a car whizzes by and honks and a few men lean out the window and yell, “Dog!”

This kind of thing happens to even truly pretty girls, although most often it happens to females like me who have some good traits, but who aren’t by any definition truly “beautiful.” It’s absolutely crushing, and it hurts for years and years.

I realize that this is not what certain posters on this board mean when they correct a fellow Christian. But it’s what the fellow Christian HEARS. THAT’s the important thing–not what you say, but what the other person hears. What they hear are very very hurtful words.

I believe I posted this earlier, but if I didn’t, I’ll repeat it. IF someone is really serious about wanting to end “disrespectful dress” in their parish, the way to do it is to make friends with all those skanks and flesh-revealers and shoulder-showoffs. I’m serious. MAKE FRIENDS with them. Be sincere and loving, and get to know them, and go out with them, and get close and learn to love them like your own children.

THEN after you are friends, you will be able to bring up the topic and discuss dress in the Presence of the Lord Jesus. There is a good chance that the bad dresser will actually listen to you once you are his/her friend, and that they will change their ways.

Does this approach sound familiar? It’s the same slow but sure approach that Blessed Mother Teresa used in India. She didn’t barrel into Calcutta and demand that everyone stop that dying and that the government start helping its poor and then for good measure berating all the rich countries in the world for allowing such awful poverty!

No, she settled in for the long haul and just started humbly and quietly LOVING people. And it worked.

It will work in YOUR parish, too.

The reason people dress in revealing clothing is that they are looking for love. They think that their clothing will make them more appealing, attractive, and loveable.

So give them the love that they are looking for.

But remember, for a perfect stranger (the word “perfect” seems appropriate, doesn’t it?) to correct someone is beyond rude. It’s mean. It’s cruel. It’s NOT loving–“tough love” is for parents to use with children, not for strangers to use with other strangers.

Correcting a stranger about their appearance is just like those mean boys who bark at girls. It will NOT accomplish what the corrector wants to accomplish, and it will probably result in bad ends; e.g., the person will be so hurt that they will do something destructive, like say something rude right back at their tormentor or even hit them.

Try the “Mother Teresa” approach, and come back here in a few years and tell us how many people are now dressing modestly because of your kind and gentle influence.
Very good post.

Worry first about modesty and looking neat. If your jeans are modest and clean, don’t worry about it.

YES!! I already said so. 🤷 Oh well, I can see why the dress threads are a problem.

a bikini top is a little different then just a bikini…yes…immodest but incredibly rare. Most of us that see nothing wrong with shorts often say…longer shorts…not gym shorts and modest…and then we get thrown in that we are advocating for bikini’s…which again…borders on the redicioulous…but yes…dress threads are a problem because everyone’s ideas about that are so different. Some might be scandalized by jeans but it would not bother me…as long as they are not super low riding…

I second you on that. There is one time I cried foul on clothing and it was on that. For years, I have been involved in my parish’s Confirmation program. We have been blessed to be given a Sunday Mass for ourselves. Part of what we do is have the 1st years and 2nd years do things like the readings. It is really good for them to experience that, and I have been a big part of the Mass Plannings for years. When we would meet earlier in the week, I would always talk about dressing respectfully. (Again, I am not going to judge people but I do feel respect should be shown. It is a good lesson before they go to Mass) The one time I had to pull someone for what they were wearing was because a girl was going to say the 1st Reading wearing a Che Guevara shirt. I had a problem with that because letting her read was like condoning all of the murder that he was responsible for. I haven’t thought about that in years till you said that. Instances like what I was talking about should be limited to few and far between extremes.

But many do. If a girl is wearing a micro mini skirt and a halter top she probably won’t receive the respect she should as a daughter of God. And, she may not even understand why–but heaven forbid we instruct anyone lest we tick them off and offend them. If she takes a pilgrimage to EWTN she won’t get into mass there. They have a dress code, so do many churches.
.
The time to give advice and instructions is before they arrive. So whoever is chaparoning the trip to EWTN should give them instructions before they pack. Once someone is at Mass or in the Adoration chapel, it is a little late to start scolding them about their clothes. So as someone said earlier, let the pastor know and he can put something in the bulletin, put a sign outside the door, etc. But it is his call.

The rest of us should dress as we would like others to and teach our children and whoever else we influence to do the same. We can pray for everyone else, but we shouldn’t becoem the clothes police.

Are you serious? You actually call people out about their attire to their faces? I wonder how many people have left that chapel never to return because of you.

I never thought I’d see the day where being disrespectful was the norm and those who were trying to hold to a standard—abusive and mean.

Me too. And someone at the parish would hear about it too. I couldn’t care less about what someone at the adoration chapel thought of me, but to picture them saying that to a non-Catholic or returning Catholic? I cringe at the thought.
Actually my daughter in law isn’t Catholic and asked what was appropriate to wear and I told her. What’s wrong with that?

First off, I think your interpretation of that scripture is missing something. If you interpret it 100% literally, you may have a point. Realistically, Jesus was commenting on the states of our souls and not of our dress. Look, I didn’t put up the post to say that people should come to church dressed as Playboy Playmates. The point I was trying to make was that we should not be judging the appearance of others who come to church. We do not know anything about them. Still we should be glad they are there. It is those kinds of judgments that drive people away from church.

Me, personally, I dress up very nice when I go to Mass/Adoration.
And I think this is a lame way of having an “anything goes” attitude. Ask anyone on this planet, they KNOW how to dress for church. It’s not about the ones who are poor or homeless, this is about people who know full well how to dress.

According to some here, you were not worthy to be in the presence of our Lord. How dare you be out of your home in anything short of what you would wear to meet the Pope, since you never know when you might stop in to spend time in adoration.

(Please, there is no reason that you should feel bad.)
I always carry a change of clothes in my trunk if I think I’m going to the church.

I see this same kind of statement in all these dress threads…I wanna know where you all are going to church that ANYONE has shown up in a bikini?
I saw a woman with a completely bare midriff, that’s pretty close…but of course it would be “offensive” to tell her anything.

I’ve seen pajamas, I’ve seen skirts so short that if you bent over nothing would be left to the imagination. I’ve seen it all, but heaven forbid we ask them nicely to please show respect when dressing for mass.
