I’ve looked through the old threads for ideas for personal home shrines, and for those whose pictures are still linked, they’re gorgeous (especially yours, Thistle!).

But I was a day late and a dollar short to those threads, and many pics have been taken down.

This is the 1st time I have a home in which I can put up a shrine and not feel self-conscious about it. It’s also the first time I’ve met a community (YOU!) of folks who share the same interests.

So I’d like to ask, what does your shrine look like now, if you have changed it since you last posted? Do you have a picture? What would you add to it? Do you spend much time praying in front of your shrine or is it more of a casual reminder? Is there a theme to your devotion? Is it very formal?

I am spending more and more time with my shrine to Our Lady of LaVang. One of my in-laws gave the statue to me; she bridges my religion with my husband’s culture. The electric candles were a thrift shop steal. They have “flicker” settings so I don’t have to worry about fire. Tacky? Perhaps. But utilitarian. There’s also a mini-lectern looking thing on which I have printed a booklet of prayers.

I wish that I had a prie-dieu, but I do have a Taize kneeler (like a mini folding bench) in front of mine. It isn’t much, and I am working on getting table runners in liturgical colors. Once every couple of months I’m going to add a smaller statue to the shrine, as well: St. Dymphna, St. Bridget of Ireland, St. Anne de Beaupre, and St. Teresa of Avila. Perhaps also a St. Michael, with my dog tags and my husband’s dog tags under it.

(I don’t want to get into the semantics of altar v. shrine v prayer corner, so I’ll just go with calling it a shrine for now, OK?)

My shrine is my monitor’s background, just one pic of the Blessed Virgin so far, but working on gettinga collage together.
 
That is lovely! We don’t have a home shrine (yet). But when we do we will probably put it in our bedroom where we gather for evening prayers anyway. Now we have a Sacred Heart painting and a whole lot o’ prayer books!
 
Misserissima Your shrine is gorgeous and I absolutely love the statue of Our Lady of LaVang! In my church we have a small Vietnamese community and the statue of Our Lady of LaVang always is honored with many flowers.

Is that some kind of a book of remembrances for the deceased on the left hand side? If you don’t mind me asking since we have this in our home. I also use incense sticks in my shrine.

That’s an awesome idea – what pic are you using? If I had my old computer up and running, I’d send you a bunch of desktops.

That’s an excellent idea , but it’s just printed note cards with Catholic prayers I’ve collected from the Internet, held together with binder rings on a stand. I have one page in English and the flip side in Vietnamese. It’s how I get to practice.

I just got into using the incense sticks; I used to go for the charcoal but the tablets became way too expensive!

Trust me, it took a while to get used to the glittery-ness of the statue! 😉 For the longest time I wondered where it should go. I’m not the glitzy type, but it all seems to be coming together.

Well, I don’t know if she has a specific title in this one, but it’s Mary wearing her blue robe and white veil, hands crossed over her breast and eyes closed in prayer. Against a cloud background. I have a friend photographing a statue of Notre-Dame du Cap in our Ottawa church, so hopefully I’ll be getting more soon.
 
Miserissima I think your shrine is beautiful and I really the Our Lady of LaVang statue, it is also beautiful. 🙂

Here is my busy “shrine” in my “office”…complete with my army of pewter Saints. 😃 The baseballs probably give it away as a “guy’s” shrine, huh… 😊 Click it to see it bigger.

I just joined up, having found my way here by checking on home altars. I am a devotee of Sts. Anne and Joachim and vist Ste. Anne de Beaupre as part of a formal pilgrimage each year. It is the Andrew Ahearn Memorial Pilgrimage July 16 - 27, from Springfield MA, where Andrew Ahearn ( cured miraculously at Ste. Anne de Beaupre in 1922) lived. In the fall, another pilgraimage visiting several Canadian shrines leaves from Springfield, a pilgrimage founded by Andrew’s wife, Agnes. One of the places visited is the St. Joachim’s Church several miles north of Ste. Ann de Beaupre.

Because of all this I am interested in constructing my own shrine/altar to honor St. Anne. I am fortunate enough to have a first-class relic of her in my guardianship. (I hesitate to say that I “own” a relic of St. Anne. Holding what is probably the most precious and authenticated relic after those of the holy cross, I regard myself more as guardian not owner.

Anyway, i am collecting ideas for the shrine/altar and was happy to come across your message.
