I just read another thread and somebody mentioned their daughter having a patron saint, well, I was never made aware of having one in my upbringing. Can you choose your own to pray to, or should it be one that shares your name (So I would have Saint Matthew)

I remember for my confirmation name i chose Joseph as it was the name of my Primary school, St.Joseph’s, would this count as mine? Thanks for any information given:)

Good question.
I recently thought through hearing conversations your patron saint is the name of a saint as your first name. So yes, yours is St Matthew.
But I was told by a devout Catholic that my patron Saint is St. Patrick. That is my middle name.
My first name, Keith, I don’t believe has a saint’s name…
Confirmation name…is just your confirmed name and Saint to emmulate.

your baptismal saint, and your confirmation saint if you have one, are your primary personal patrons, but you a free to choose another one who appeals to you.

I am not sure if there is a Saint Harry. But I have asked Saint Philomena and Saint Mary Magdalene to be my patron saints, and to be beside me when I pray, joining their prayers to mine.

I have a small shrine set up for Philomena, and will do the same for the Magdalene as money allows.

Looks like I have St. Matthew and St. Joseph then. Nice choices if you ask me 🙂 thanks all for your (name removed by moderator)ut!

Harry is normally short for Henry (as in Prince Harry of England is actually Prince Henry) or short for Harold. There is a saint Harold and a good dozen or so St Henrys, so I guess you can take your pick. By the way I just found a St Hannibal - so even Hannibal Lecter has a patron saint (poor saint  )

This is probably the most comprehensive saints index on the internet - and an important resource in my quest for saint geekdom!

I think they keep pawning me off on one another 🙂 . I’ve been a difficult case. Tim

Naaah, I reckon they love a challenge. They’re probably just calling up the cavalry for you 😉

Wonderful link, Lily! I bookmarked it for future reference. 🙂

There are also patron saints of various professions and for different causes, so you might choose one of them as your patron as well. I also look to saints who can be examples and guides in areas where I’m weak.

usually the saint that shares your name is a special patron…(that is if you have the same name as a saint…many people don’t)

the name of the saint that you receive in confirmation is another special patron…

and any saint that you yourself wish to take as your patron…can be your special patron saint…there is no limit how many you can have…

there is no limit on earth how many friends you can have…so in heaven there is no limit on how many parton saints (who are our heavenly friends) you can have…

it’s a personal choice as to the amount…it’s how many you yourself feel comfortable with

ANGELIC PEACE

I don’t share a saint’s name for my first name but my middle name is Marie. My confirmation name is either Theresa or Teresa. I was confirmed in second grade, I think, and I’m 46 years old now. I can’t find any records with the spelling of the name. I contacted the parish where I’d been confirmed but they didn’t have a record of it, either. I’ve been looking for a patron saint, too. I have an anxiety disorder and wanted a saint to help me with that. I bought a St. Dymphna medal but satan or whoever or whatever it is in the background kind of freaked me out so I’ve never worn it.:o

My birthday is on the feast day of the Apostle St. Bartholomew. A man named Bartholomew was instrumental in my conversion. When I was confirmed, I took that name as my confirmation name and declared him my personal patron saint. It seemed appropriate.

St. Jude, the patron saint of impossible causes, did some pretty miraculous things for me, so I took his name at Confirmation–in the feminine form “Judith”…👍

I was born on John the Baptist’s feast, and my confirmation name was Stephen. Seems like my patrons are good speakers:D

St Jude has done a lot for me too…thank you St Jude…Judith is a nice name and its <> since there is a Judith in the Bible.I think its great to have friends ( Saints ) in heaven who pray for us. Saint Padre Pio had St Francis and St Michael the Archangel.

I was thinking about a patron saint. I had not even considered Saint Monica, but somehow felt strongly pulled towards her. After having this feeling for awhile, I decided to make her my patron saint. About a year later as I was reading a book about saints, I was wondering if she had really been a wise choice. The very next sentence I read in the book was, “If you need prayer, asking Saint Monica to pray for you might be a good idea. She is the saint known for her unceasing prayer.”

Sometimes God seems to speak quite directly.

Both my given names are also Saints, Paul and Martin.
