Being in the south and surrounded by Baptists of all kinds, Southern, Indepenendant, and even “Bible based” I am constantly asked if I have a personal relationship with Jesus. Since they are “sola scriptura” I ask for them to show me the passage in the Bible that relates to this(Baptist minister was dumbfounded that a Catholic actually knew and reads the Bible) I always come back “Where two or three are gathered in my name,I will be there”

Here’s the thing abou that verse. Read it in context and you will se that what the Lord is speaking about is discipline.
Matthew 18 15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
Now if this verse is about a “personal relationship” then why does Jesus remind them that the authority being sought here by His presence has to do with the binding and loosing of sin?
This verse has nothing at all to do with relating to God, it has to do with the Church and its authority to forgive sin. In the same way that the Torah commands that two or three witnesses be given to ensure the guilt of a condemned man, so also thew testimony of two or three witnesses who can bind or loose sin may a man be put out of communion with Christ due to his lack of repentance.
Now if your friends wish to know where they can have a “pesonal relationship” with Christ then you can refer them to
Matthew 26 : 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
and Luke 19 : 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Isn’t it strange that our Lord specifically commanded us to “eat His body” and “drink His blood” and that we should do this “in remembrance of me” and those who claim a personal relationship with Jesus will argue this is the very thing you should
NOT do?
