An infant family member is being baptized in the Catholic Church next month. Neither parent is a churchgoer, but I guess that’s beside the point. As I was searching for gift ideas, I came across these very pretty personalized rosary beads. Is it “wrong” that rosary beads include a child’s name beaded within the rosary?

Also, as I said these people are not practicing Catholics even though they are beloved family members. In my mind i find a religious gift is my way of hopefully encouraging some faith, but is it inappropriate / not worth it? I can’t imagine anyone in the family even knows how to pray the rosary, let alone will ever try to learn.

Hope this makes sense! Thanks!

I think it sounds nice.

You may want to have the rosary blessed, too, before giving it to the baby’s family.

Just my opinion so take it FWIW 🙂
  1. It’s not “wrong”. Rosary beads aren’t holy in and of themselves, but a tool for us to help say the prayers of the rosary (hence the various types and the ability to say the rosary even without rosary beads). However, to me, adding in someone’s name simply encourages the use of these symbols to be more secular and less religious.
  2. A religious gift may be good, but if the rosary is never going to be used as a rosary…then is it really anything more than a nifty trinket? I suggest something more child-orientated … like maybe an angel bear with the accompanying guardian angel prayer (or even one that says the prayer or bedtime prayer when pressed?) Something warm / cuddly / cute that might become the child’s favorite and might gently influence the family towards turning towards God?
Best wishes,
CJ

The child might grow up in faith regardless of the parents, and for that matter, the parents are baptizing their child as Catholic–they must have some faith. There is lots of time for cuddly toys to be given, but a baptism is such a special occasion. It calls for something special. A rosary is a splendid idea! And there is potential for a childhood rosary to be cherished as the individual grows into adulthood and hopefully in faith. Include a booklet on how to pray the Rosary.

I think of situations like this as scattering seeds as our Lord says. It is a very nice and thoughtful gift, sure to touch their hearts. It may encourage them or the child to pursue holiness , now or sometime in the future.

You need to weigh the parents feelings towards religion, you don’t want your gift misconstrued as an evangelical ‘trick’.

I would not have it blessed For the following reasons…

I’ve made several single decade rosaries, had one blessed, then lost it, since then I don’t get them blessed to avoid losing a sacramental (strangely, I have never lost another!).

Another problem could be the potential choking hazard of the beads…

Go with an Angel Bear! If you want the child to have it, the rosary could go into it’s christening box as a memento of the baptism.

Just tell the parents to hang it in the child’s room away form the crib. Problem solved, and YES do bless them. 👍

What she said. :hey_bud:

Also, having the Rosary personalized with the child’s name means their less likely to just get rid of it or forget when and how it came into their possession.
