Perspective or just messed up?

I remeber hearing a sermon some time ago and seeing an add for a movie made me remeber it. In the Sermon it was said how movies today are more and more secular and take your mind away from god and how it would be much better to do as he did and just listen to some religous radio (and I have the vague scince though I can’t prove it, that he was one of those people that went and looked at nature to see God).
Now I see it slightly differently . When I see nature I see bugs, some ugly brush (which proboly has a poisiones snake), and a lake that probloy has more desises and germs that one would care to mention as opposed to the movies he hates were I see, lets take zombie movies for example (scince it was a zombie comerical that reminded me of this whole thing) I see radom people take on evil. And That brings me to thinking of God. People going around taking on evil to get rid of evil and restore tranquility throughout the land (kind of like Jesus going through this rather gruesome things like being wiped and crucified like in the Passion of the Christ Movie).
Now I did not bring us hear to debate who is right, who is wrong and so on and so forth but, rather is this a differance of Perspective or is this something that I really should avoid or acctually look into more seriously from a moral look before casting it off as irrelavent? IMO (not sure how much that counts for) you are right, that some people might say ‘this takes you away from God’ but if for you it actually brings you closer to God then that would make it a good thing for you. Doesn’t work for everything, but things like music and movies I reckon people go around too zealously these days saying not to watch or listen to them even though it’s not a sin to do so. So if from your perspective zombie movies help you in your relationship with God, then by all means watch them.
 
I love movies, not usually zombie movies, but I am a big movie fan.

The problem is that some movies have questionable values, especially porn and some that promote questionable ideas.

It really depends on how mature the movie goer is, what message the films are trying to promote, and how the movie goer responds to what he sees.

Some folks are easily influenced by what they see, while others are not bothered at all.

For us Catholics, the best movies are the ones that promote good Catholic values. IF you can view questionable movies without having it influence your behavior or your values then you will have no problems with most films. IF you are more easlily influenced then it is best to stick with films that have been approved by Catholic critics.
 
I look at movies with the idea that Jesus is sitting next to me watching it too. Would I still be watching? If yes, then it’s an ok movie. If I’d quickly flip it off, well…maybe I’d best not be watching.
 
I think the media we watch and listen to has to be judged by it’s over all worth, not just if it portrays evil or evil characters. For me, a movie like Pulp Fiction is too intense and offensive, but for another person it might be seen as a morality play showing people prone to the sins it shows the kind of end such evil brings upon those who engage in it. Believe it or not, there are people for whom The Lord of the Rings is too intense because of the orcs and battle scenes. We have to know ourselves and what is appropriate for us, but without deliberately going to see things or listening to things or reading material we know will lead us into sin with the excuse that “I can handle it.” If something is a near occasion of sin–no matter what it is, we ought to avoid it like the plague.

This idea has been posted on these forums before, but it’s not really that good a way to think. For example, consider adoration, where Jesus is present. There are a lot of things which it is perfectly okay to do when you’re not in adoration that would not be okay to do at adoration. For example, chatting to friends. Just because you would turn the TV off if Jesus was there doesn’t mean you have to turn it off when He isn’t there. Hope this makes sense.

true, up to a point. I’m assuming you mean that if a sex scene came on, or a character swore, or a violent scene was played out? I think Jesus would be quite happy to watch those - if the film, the story, was a good one - a real story that talked about humanity and good and evil and love and life and so on. - where the questionable scene actually had a place and a purpose. remember Christ dined with prostitutes and tax collectors, and fishermen. the converstion was probably quite ribald at times, and Jesus wouldn’t have been sitting in the corner with his hands over his ears. He wouldn’t have been telling dirty jokes, either of course!
