Peter and Circumcision

I recently have been discussing Catholicism with a Protestant Preacher, and the topic of discussion turned to the papacy.

He talks of a “preponderance” of evidence against Peter as pope.

Take, for instance, Peter’s position on circumcision. How could a man who was infallible try to propagate this heretical doctrine?

This sounds like the statement of someone who doesn’t understand what the doctrine of Papal infallibilty really means. I suggest researching that so that you can explain it to him in your own words.

Uh, there is no evidence that Peter held a heretical view as concerning circumcision. He did, however, along with Barnabas, play the hypocrite and only eat with Jewish Christians, staying away from the “unclean” Gentile Christians. But acting contrary to truth (i.e., sin) is not something that has bearing on the doctrine of infallibility. Obviously, Peter and the Popes are sinners. It’s that they cannot officially declare falsehood as being
part of the faith. And your preacher buddy cannot demonstrate that, especailly in light of the fact that it was to Peter that the revelation of the full inclusion of the Gentiles was given.
