Peter and Paul

Perhaps someone can throw some light on the relationship between these 2 giants.

I just finished viewing a CD entitled Peter and Paul twice. Anthony Hopkins played Paul ,and Robert Foxworth, Peter.
At the end Paul laments the fact that he and Peter were at odds most of their preaching days. Peter is shown to be envious of Paul’s great success with the Gentiles, and Paul sad because of his own pride which kept them apart… I have only recently begun to study that extraordinary, tireless, Paul. I have not read all of his letters but plan to. Has anyone read them or found any hint of a lifelong struggling friendship between these two chosen souls? I am aware of their dispute over circumsion for the Gentiles and the keeping of the Mosaic Law.

Other than that point, the CD was one of the best I have seen.

In these matters, James of Jerusalem opposed Paul. Peter supported Paul, though later Paul scolded him for hypocrisy as related in Galatians (as you may know). Protestant revisionism? A Catholic film of Acts, or even just Peter, would be awesome - though everyone else would be disputing it. I’m not saying they should have him wear a tiara!

There was one incident referred to in Galatians where Paul opposed Peter, because Peter had started giving rich people precedence in the church over poor people. There is no indication of any contention between the two beyond that.

Secularists today like to read new things back into the characters of that time period, to make it more exciting, from their perspectives. Mary of Magdalene becomes Jesus’ wife, Judas Iscariot becomes a kind of subsequently maligned hero, Paul and Peter’s single recorded quarrel becomes lifelong antagonism . . . It’s ridiculous. Don’t pay any attention to it. I’ve looked into these viewpoints, and the evidence supporting them is virtually nonexistent.

The view of Judas is based upon a lot of hypothesis and one Gnostic document. The view of Mary Magdalene and Jesus is based upon one apocryphal document that is so fragmentary it could mean anything. It says something like “Disciples . . . upper room . . . Jesus . . . kiss her often . . .” It’s just about impossible to know what it’s saying. And the view of Paul and Peter is based on nothing but the single quarrel between them recorded in Galatians.

Thanks to both respondants. I am also of the opinion that the quarrel was exaggerated, in this case for a “Hollywood” ending. It sure made it heart-rendering. Therewas one other error, I believe in the movie. Paul was beheaded before Peter’s crucifixion. But, then, did anyone keep records of this sort. Nothing in Acts, and civil records for people who were considered a nuisance, criminals or rabble rousers? Anyway, dates are only to satifsy a little curiosity. The fact of their martyrdom is the significant point.

I still say, however, that the CD was superby acted with most of the account according to Sacred Scrpture. ( It challenges a person’s knowledge of Sacred Scripture)
