I was writing a blog about this and when I got to this point-
It struck me that the tears of St Peter were symbolic of his baptism into Jesus since before, as far as we can tell, he had only had the baptism of John. The mixture of salt and water in tears calls to mind this from 2 Kings 2:21 He went out to the spring of the waters, and cast the salt into it, and said: Thus saith the Lord: I have healed these waters, and there shall be no more in them death or barrenness. which is a type or figure of baptism I think.
Wisdom and Bitter TearsThe Gospels are insistent in recording that this Prince of Apostles did not simply weep but that he wept “bitterly.” These were tears of a man whose heart was breaking. His worldly human heart was being broken on the rock of his secret spiritual heart.
