We are talking about 2 kinds of people:

Those that call their pets babies, which is their own endearing term and nobody’s business, and

Those that think their pets are like human babies and hence the two, that is human babies and animals, are the same.
Well my cats are like children to me . My fiancé and I don’t have and don’t plan on having children of our own as we both have special needs.
my cats were kittens now they are older
Seeing momma cats and mamma dogs with puppies and kittens so cute

Why is either anyone’s business? Why should someone demand athat nd how can they anyway force anyone to believe as they do about animals?

There are a certain segment of people that do take the pet thing to far. I had an acquaintance lament all over facebook how people with children don’t understand how her dogs were her children and when she had to put her dog to sleep its was just the same as a parent whose child dies.
I thought to myself “Say that to my mother and you may not be left standing.” My sister died at 21 of cancer. The fact is any one that is that over the top will not hear you anyway. A person who actually thinks an animal and a child are equal is unbalanced and really not reachable.
So sorry about your sister. However, unless your facebook acquaintance set out to deliberately upset your Mum or you, why such a your violent reaction?

I couldn’t agree more about this being more widespread than suggested. In fact, there was a report a few months ago that said the number one expense in homes in America today (including cars, mortgage, education, etc.) is pets. When we had dogs, we loved them dearly. However, we knew there was a huge difference between the animals and our kids. I’ve met lots of people who can’t or have trouble making that distinction. If you need some firsthand experience with this, look up the nearest boutique pet supply shop and spend an afternoon in there browsing.

As far as the notion that these people who equate pets with people are generally pro-life regarding their pets but decidedly un-pro-life when regarding people, at least among the people I know I can’t think of a single one who doesn’t fit this stereotype. When my mother-in-law was in the hospital a year or so ago for a routine procedure, my wife’s one friend misunderstood us when we told her she hadn’t regained consciousness (she’d just come out of surgery). She was quite eager to tell my wife to have them pull the plug. Later that same year she spent several tens of thousands of dollars keeping her cancer-riddled, 14-year-old, deaf and blind dog alive.
If a friend of mine said that to me about my mother, she would cease to be a friend. Then no one would have known about what she spent on her dog (innocent in all this).

OK. Pets are great and we love them a ton. I agree. And when we lose them it is “heartbreaking” And they can help us. But not everything that eats with us or helps us is our baby. right?

This is the part where we can take things a little too far. You equate losing “human” family members with pets. That is a gross misstatement about what losing a person, is like and what family is. You cannot marry or procreate a pet. You did not come from a pet. It is not a family. Many people use this term as an endearing term. And that is understandable, but you almost seem to mean actual family and assign to them things that are not real.

My dog is my baby.

Not literally, for obvious reasons (I am a human male!)

But affectionately, as I have no-one else to baby.

So what the heqq?

That is hopefully not the only obvious reason.😉

I am glad that you have the companionship of an animal. I think God intended that kind of compassion. But it is not your “baby” affectionately, (at least I hope not.) Parental love is much more than what we feel for an animal. Also, your “baby” is engineered to be mortal at a much faster rate than human babies. It is this confusion that can be downright hurtful to someone you may be trying to soothe when they have experienced the unnatural loss of a child.

I am not sure about the what the heqq. I am not saying that people (including you) cannot feel great emotion to an animal. But they are indeed animals. Jesus was the Son of Mary, but the donkey he rode into Jerusalem on was not the same. Nor was it the same when one of his disciples lost a “pet” or when they lost a daughter and Jesus brought back to life an immortal soul that was lost. Dogs, cats, or my neighbor;s snake all can be the object of human love. But they cannot be the giver of it. Nor can they have an economy of salvation or eternity like angels and humans.

I know pets aren’t babies - I’d never drop a baby from shoulder height! 😃

Still, you recognize the essential difference there is between caring for an innocent animal and training up a child in the Lord.

There is a reason pets are not baptised or taught the Rosary or brought to the sacraments. It is because cats and dogs are fundamentally different creatures than human beings.

Animals are God’s creation, but human beings alone are made in the image and likeness of God. All creation gives God glory, but human beings alone are made to know, love, and serve God in this life in order to be happy with God for all eternity in th he next. This is the difference between adopting a child, even a child with less mental capacity than a pet, even a child who is no relative of yours (let alone your own flesh and blood) and taking on the duty of caring for an animal, as much joy and comfort as that animal might give.

You do understand this, right?

Parents are not blessed with children in order to give them someone to “baby.”

Parents are blessed with children in order that the children may come to know, love, and serve God. Parenthood is a sacred duty in a way that caretaking of an animal in need cannot be. That does not make it wrong to form a bond of companionship with a pet. To see an animal with eyes of compassion and gratitude is a good thing! What is wrong is to either anthropomorphize the pet or reduce the dignity of the child so that the two are deemed the same.

If a friend of mine said that to me about my mother, she would cease to be a friend. Then no one would have known about what she spent on her dog (innocent in all this).
Not my friend, not my choice to associate with her. I did point out the discrepancy in her attitudes to my wife. Numerous times.

And you do understand that animals have no free will and cannot sin, right? That is why Jesus did not come to save animals, they do not need to be saved. So why even mention the Rosary ??

There is no need to be condescending.

It’s not good for the animal to be anthropomorphized either. This is a common mistake people make with animals, to try to train them as though they were children. They are not, they do not understand your words and they do not form associations the way people, even small children, do. The result can often be a very confused and nervous animal and a very upset human.

That said, I indulge in that sort of language often enough.

Animals have no free will and cannot sin and that is why Christ did not come to save them, you do understand that, don’t you? There is no need to be condescending.

We would not marry family members or people who do not have the mental capacity to consent. Adopted children do not come from their adopted parents It is not for anyone to presume to tell anyone how to love a pet or that their pet is not family…

My pets are family too. My human family would not presume to tell me otherwise. You can love your human family as well as your pets. It is not mutually exclusive.

Hi everyone,

What would be the right thing to do when a dog owner keeps telling you, directly or indirectly, that her dog is just like your baby. In other words, when you say, for instance, “my baby keeps waking up due to bad dreams and then I have to rock/ feed/soothe him” and you get told back, " I never go to my dog when he cries due to a bad dream, he usually soothes himself".

Do you ignore it?
Do you look back in utter shock?
Do you say pointedly " babies are not the same as pets?
Do you stay silent and let the silly statement remain in the room for everyone to also feel the silliness of it?
What should one do/ say?

Ps: to all pet owners, don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against them. I love animals but they have their own place and that is not the same as a baby’s.
I had a cat go missing several years ago, and a woman from the place I’d bought him from (they found out he was missing because they sent his “foster father” to check up on him after I’d “adopted” him) lectured me on how it was just like my toddler had gone missing and how I was a bad “mom” blah blah blah.

I said “No, my cat is not like a toddler. He isn’t human. He’s an adult animal, a good mouser, and he can fend for himself. I’m not his mother, I’m his owner, and though I am responsible for taking care of him, he is nothing like a human child and doesn’t need to be thought of or treated like one.”

He was found several weeks later in perfect health in a neighbor’s garage. Honestly, the lesson I learned was to avoid getting pets from people who think pets are “babies.” But I don’t think you need to correct someone unless they are attacking you. This company had their lawyer calling me and they were making veiled threats if I didn’t find my cat. It was ridiculous.

There is no need to be condescending.
Human beings, and human beings alone, are made in the image and likeness of God. I do not see how it is condescending to say so? It is a real difference. Animals do not pray; the Rosary is beyond them. What insult is there in that? Does it insult a mountain to say it is not a star?

A child is farther beyond a dog or cat than a star is beyond a mountain. That is not condescending. It is what it is. If you allow your life to regard a dog or cat as the same as a child (?!?) and lose sight of the difference, don’t take offense that the rest of the world doesn’t follow suit.

I was referring to the manner in which you responded to the poster. I laugh off little barbs like the one you just tried to throw at me… This is an anonymous public forum and it is so easy to write at length to put down others. Please remember that some never come back to post on threads again.

So sorry about your sister. However, unless your facebook acquaintance set out to deliberately upset your Mum or you, why such a your violent reaction?
You misunderstand, I wouldn’t be violent -my mother would. Because comparing her daughter to a dog and really meaning it (and trust me I’ve grown up with this acquaintance she really meant it) would cause my mother to go into a rage. Didn’t say it was ok, just said that’s what would happen.

This person used to be a good friend but over time I realized she is unbalanced (not just about pets). While we were still friends she invited me to go to a healing Mass with her and mentioned she was bringing her dog. When I responded “To Mass?” She says “What? He’s sick and its a healing Mass.” I mentioned I’d be working that day. She’s still my facebook friend but I have it so she doesn’t show up in my news feed. Mainly because she went on an immature rant about another childhood friend and aired this person’s dirty laundry all over facebook knowing this persons own children would read this stuff, secondly because she puts up about 40+ pet rescue pictures per day on her facebook. So not balanced. I don’t unfriend her because that would cause more drama too. I’m very selective on who I allow as friends on facebook these days.
