Dear all, I am a cradle Catholic from Singapore.

As a pet lover, I have heard comments of our Pets taking on negative “energy” from us when we (are unhappy or unwell and) touch them. Some even say that our pets take over our ill-health and sickness on our behalf!

This doesn’t sound right to me. I also do not want any of my sicknesses to be “transferred” to my pets.

I would like to know our Catholic view on this.

Believing in God’s mercy and love for all his creation.

I do think pets, maybe especially dogs because of their history with humans, can “pick up” on human emotions. I watched a bit of a documentary a while back on PBS that had research suggesting that dogs read human faces differently than they read other dogs (they actually look at faces in the same way people do.) So they might have some way of knowing when we are sad or upset.

But the idea of absorbing or taking on our illnesses doesn’t sound right - it sounds like magic or pagan nonsense.

No, they do not take on our sickness or illness. As Silica said, dogs are capable of picking up visual cues about our moods. There are also dogs trained to be able to smell diseases on people.

I love animals, and my dog more then I sometimes understand. And yes, a dog, or a cat, can “pick up” our mood, and react to it. When I am sad my dog comes to me and try to comfort me or make me happy. But “negative” energy and all that is far beyond my understanding so all I can say is that all I know is that there are no “negative” energy, that is something so far fetched that we should not even think about it. As my son say: “keep it simple”. And welcome to CAF, I am sure you will enjoy this site.

When someone in my family is sick, their inactivity is an invitation for the cats to sit with them all day. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship - the sick person has some cute company, and the cat has a warm body to snuggle against. There’s no transfer of illness. 🙂

Pets, particularly dogs are empathetic to human suffering, they can also warn a diabetic owner if they are about to take a hypo or an epileptic if they are about to take a seizure! When you talk about them taking away negative energy it initially sounds a bit “new age” but a purring cat has the capacity to resonate with one of the human bodies frequencies that actually reduces stress and blood pressure! So if a cat can help lower your high blood pressure then the answer to your question is yes, animals can take away negative energy! Amazing what god has provided for us.🙂

Scientifically, it is possible that humans can transmit diseases to animals and animals can transmit them to humans. It just depends on the condition. Typically common colds and flus are nothing to worry about in that regard.

My pets have been a God send when ever I’m down I’m hang with them and always feel better. There uncern and innocence from all the **** that goes on in the world is always refreshing. Sometimes I do get annoyed when they want to get me up at 5am to eat but I have cats which are twilght creatures and it’s their nature to be most active then so it’s not to annoy me it’s instinct.
