Which Philip baptized the Ethiopian? Was it the Apostle or the deacon?

Footnotes in the Haydock and Navarre say that it is Philip the deacon (not Philip the apostle). The Haydock notes that as deacon, he did not have the power to confirm. Peter and John came to confirm the new converts. (cf Acts 8:14-17)

This same Philip is referred to in Acts 21:8: “…and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, …” (see Acts 6:3-5)

these 7, including Stephen, were appointed to distribute food to the poor.

Maybe he got promoted.
Or he did both; evangelizing after his assigned task of serving food was finished.

Note Acts 8:1

1* And Saul was consenting to his death. And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the region of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

The deacons were apparently driven out of Jerusalem, but the apostles stayed there at that time.

This is an interesting example of God using evil for good. The enemies sought to scatter and disrupt the church, but only succeeded in spreading it to new fields. Without Saul’s push they might still be sitting in Jerusalem awaiting orders.

Reminds one a bit of Joseph’s brothers selling him into Egypt. The brothers had evil motives, but that was where God wanted Joseph.

It appears Philip’s duties of serving food may have ended when the community was scattered. As verse 4 says “Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down…”
