So there’s this jew in my class, who was once a protestant minister, who claims that Christ was not fully divine and emptied himself of his divinity and that God puts limit on his power and he cites Philippians 2:1-11 as the text that supports this.

Well, um, this is very interesting for a Jew to say lol. To Judaism, the very idea that God would give His divinity to anyone for any period of time for any reason would be about the worst blasphemy one could utter.:ehh:

Yet another example of Scripture taken out of context.:banghead:

Phillipians 2:6 clearly says that CHRIST was God, but he, in his humility, which he expressed by his encarnation, did not considered himself equal to God.

Many people in Humility do not consider themselves being worthy or deserving of many things, but that does NOT means they are NOT worthy or deserving of such things. IT is the same case here.

Phillipians 2:11 then says that JESUS IS THE LORD, this title of LORD (in hebrew adonai) was reserved only to God.

THat ex-protestant now Jew person, does not know what he was talking about.

Many blessings,

E.C.

The Douay Rheims has “debased” instead of “emptied”. Here is the footnote for verse 7 that the Geo. Haydock (Douay) Bible has:

Ver. 7 *“But debased himself:” *divested Himself of all the marks of greatness, for the love of mankind. The Greek text signifies, *“he made himself void”; *on which account Dr. Wells, instead of "made Himself of no reputation", as in the Protestant translation, has changed it into “emptied Himself”; not but that the true Son of God must always remain truly God, as well as by His incarnation truly man, but that in Him as man appeared no marks of His divine power and greatness. …
