Really your priest is in the best position to guide you on this. He knows you, your journey, your family, your Church… 🙂
Thank you 5 loaves- you are absolutely right. Unfortunately we don’t have a priest at present, but are doing a lot of reader’s vespers, and the Metropolitan serves Divine Liturgy for us at present, until a priest is found who would be willing to serve our little parish… 😃 our little parsish has done without priest for over a year now. We learned the correct byzantine practices from the previous two, and it seems that the Metropolitan wants to keep us “the way we are” or he could’ve just assigned any “Latinized” for lack of a better word, priest to us, probably? idk. Our previous priest and my director allowed me to follow the fast as strictly as I would like to, he did not discourage me, but he is gone now and I’m falling off the wagon. :o

If one is* focused* on what not to eat, that is not fasting as understood in the Eastern/Orthodox Churches.

There is so much good writing out there on the place and purpose of fasting and feasting. Anything by Fr Alexander Schmemann, and Met. Kallistos Ware is a good resource. Or one of the many podcasts on Ancient Faith Radio on fasts such as this one. Or this with Fr Moses, who is a member of CAF EC Section. These are important resources but we are always told to fast only with the aid of our spiritual father.

Prayer is the heart of the fast.
and, thanks for the great links!

I would see if there is a Ukrainian priest in another part of the country that could correspond with your community and whatnot and help you out with such questions.

Also make friends with the ethnic Ukrainians, they know best because they grew up in the tradition.

Those are some very good ideas- thanks!
