Dear Ciero,

Actually, in all humility and silliness - I don’t know how!

Perhaps Phillip could help you out there at some point . . .

To describe it, it is a series of light brown, dark brown and beige longish steps, fastened together with special cord on either end to look just like the steps of a Lestovka. Phillip (quite ingeniously) made a beautiful Cross with tassel at the end (which Lestovka’s don’t have, but which makes his creation all the more appealing).

On either end, there are the traditional three-steps with a knot above them as one would find on any Lestovka.

And then Phillip put beads where the three larger divider steps would be (after the 12, 38th and 33rd groupings).

It is in every which way a true Lestovka but it is made from wooden steps rather than leather ones - and as someone who has used a Lestovka for years, I will tell you I must prefer what Phillip has made.

If it were not so, I would have told you . . .

And Phillip made me a prayer rope that is the very best I’ve ever had in my life!! I have it with me now as I write this - can’t, won’t let it out of my sight or hands.

And his creations are extremely durable and strong which is another plus for his work.

Really, you will ADORE his labour!!

Alex

Alex would you be able to post a pix of the Leskova Phillip made for you? I would greatly appreciate it!

Ciero
Should Alex choose to post a picture of the Lestovka I made for him I would like to mention that it was my first attempt, using only materials that I had available at the time, and modeled only off of descriptions and bad photographs. 😊 I thought it turned out pretty well, and I’m pleased that Br. Alex was so happy with the results, but I do hope to make a slightly improved design while maintaining the basic concept.

The reason I asked for the photo was I’ve never seen one up close and can’t figure out how one is prayed on.

Thanks!

Hahahaha!!! I’ve actually only seen/held one briefly once. Apart from that I’ve only seen photographs. 😃 I’d always wanted one, so I thought I’d have a go at making one (ironically this is also how I started making chotkis). A nearby department/crafting store had a box of assorted beads that included the tube-shaped beads I thought would work sufficiently as “steps;” however, they weren’t all the same color, giving the end product an almost Native American feel to it (perhaps this could be my contribution to an American “inculturation” of the Byzantine traditions 😛 ). I ended by stringing the “steps” together in the same way as the “Sacrifice Beads” of St. Therese of Lisieux. Br. Alex was so kind in describing the Lestovka, its symbolism, and prayer rule, that I decided to gift my first attempt to him. His pleasure in my work has encouraged me to pursue my Lestovkas’ further development. I did make one other one out of foot-ball shaped beads, but it is now in the possession of a friend/fellow parishioner of mine. To this day I still do not own one, but I’m workin’ on it. 👍

Dear Phillip,

There is a genuine leather lestovka that is on its way to you in the mail . . . 😉

Here’s a site that has pictures that are up and close:

This is the one that is on its way to you.

Thanks, Br. Alex,

This will be the springboard for adjusting my design to more accurately reflect the Old Believer’s Lestovka.

Incidentally, what would you think of having the Cross on one side and a Matyria of 7 on the other?

Br. Ciero,

I don’t actually have any pictures of the 2 Lestovkas I’ve made. Perhaps when I get around to making some more and firming up my design I’ll be able to post some, or at least e-mail some to you just so you can have a look. Are you interested in the way mine look in particular, or just in the looks of a Lestovka in general? 😛

Actually, that would make your Lestovka much closer to the ideal type than any I’ve seen, if you would do that!

You should be getting the leather Lestovka any day now . . .

Alex

Just a further note to say that Phillip’s work has kept me focused on prayer and penitence throughout these days of Lent!!

I’m telling others about him since they want to know where I got the beautiful Lestovka (“I’ve never seen one like that before? Where can I get one?”).

A beadsman extraordinaire, to be sure . . .🙂

Alex

Thank you for recommending me so highly, Alex. I only hope and pray that I can live up to the standard and expectations that you have set! 😛

Feel free to give people my information if you meet someone who would like a Lestovka or chotki. E-mailing me always works best. I’ll be in touch soon.

And if anyone wants to be really popular in their parish, just get a lestovka from Phillip!!

You will have trouble being humble . . . 😉

Alex

I just received two prayer ropes today that are of awesome quality. My only regret is that I should have ordered 100 beads instead of 50, I can’t tie the rope around my wrist 😊

I’m glad they arrived safely and that you are pleased. If you’d like some 100 knot ropes I can provide… 😃 Although I’ve currently only got Greek style ropes on hand. 😛

I’ve figured out how to get it on my wrist. I will learn how to pray the Jesus Prayer effectively first with the guidance of my priest. Then I will consider getting a longer one.

Thank you Phillip. You are God’s blessing to us. 👍

Mr. Rolfes is always ready to “Phil” us in on so many things . . . 😉

:rotfl:

Perhaps I do tend to be over-opinionated and too quick to speak. For this I apologize!

BTW, has anyone ever read Fr. Malone’s book on inner prayer? I don’t remember the exact title, but I’m considering purchasing a copy at some point. I’ve read a little by him in the past and have thoroughly enjoyed his work. It never hurts to read even more about the tradition of inner prayer, whether it be from an Eastern, Western or Oriental perspective.

Dear Master Beadsman,

No need to apologise for anything - was just trying to do a play on words . . . 🙂

You always speak with your legendary well-informed background!

I’m pleased to learn that you received your Lestovka and are satisfied with it. I was concerned because of the postal strikes in your area.

As always, thanks for your support, encouragement and recommendations. Alex, some days it’s your words of kindness that keep me making chotki and Lestovki.

Phillip
