Philosophy Book Recommendations

I’ve just recently got interested in philosophy as well as Thomas Aquinas, but I’m not sure where to start.

I have a book titled “Hooked On Philosophy” by Robert A. O’Donnell, but I’m not sure as to how good this book is (with all the sketchy philosophies going around).

Also, any other book or website suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Chesterton’s biography of Aquinas is a little gem! Anything by Etienne Gilson on Aquinas is gold - he really is the most recent master of Thomistic thought.

The textbooks I use for philosophy courses may be found in www.fraternitypublications.com. Click on the philosophy tab, and the books by D.Q.McInerny are my favorites. Don’t know if he is related to Ralph McInerny of Fr. Dowling fame.

Fraternity Publications is the bookshop of the Fraternal Society of St. Peter, a traditional catholic religious organization. Note that I am not a member of the Fraternity. I am a layman.

It is not easy anymore to find good, thomistic books, which is why I am keeping those that I bought from years back. Also, I was able to collect a lot of used, but out-of-print books from www.addall.com.

How about you? Do you have any favorite authors?

Well, one of my favorites is Edward Feser, I have a copy of the S.T. ( Black Friars Translation, England - great notes and commentary ), and most of his works are available for on line reading, Gilson - Elements of Christian Philosophy ( one of my favorites ), The Philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, Henri Rahner - The Philosophy of Being and the Philosophy of God, Charles A Hart - Thomistic Metaphysics, Maurice R Holloway - An Introduction to Natural Theology, Peter Hoenen - Reality and Judgment, Raymond J Anable - Philosophical Psychology, Frederick D Wilhelmsen - Man’s Knowledge of Reality, George E Klubertanz - The Philosophy of Human Nature, Cardinal Mercier - Scholastic Philosophy Vols 1 & 2, all of Colpelston’s History of Philosophy, William A Wallace - The Elements of Philosophy & From a Realist Point of View ( He is 94 and still working
dominicanhistory.blogspot.com…an-priest.html ). Check him out, he is a real brain. And I have some odds and ends up stairs which aren’t important.

I think " The Metaphysical Thought of Thomas Aquinas by John F. Wipple would be a good book to study.

I greatly liked Digital Universe, Analog Soul, which I’ve just recently read three times. It is the most complete and wide ranging such book I’ve read, and the only effective integration of physics and theology. It is probably too much for a beginner, but keep it in mind for later down the road.
 
If you are interested in pursuing the connections between science and philosophy and religion, the best book I know of is Roy Abraham Varghese’s The Wonder of the World: A Journey from Modern Science to the Mind of God. It is said to have been instrumental in converting the famous atheist Antony Flew to theism before he died.

Liberal Facism by Jonah Goldberg…one of the best books I know of for understanding Western culture today and it’s philosophical roots.
 
I was thinking about reading “The History Of Western Philosophy” by Bertrand Russel. The only 2 philosophy books I’ve read before are the republic by plato and the genealogy of morality by nietzsche. I’m really not sure where to start so I figure when i get through this book i’ll have a couple i’m interested in studying by themselves.

I don’t think I can describe to you how much of a newb I am in philosophizing. I don’t even know if my mind is cut out for it. I can follow math, I did pretty good in English class, but I’ve never really studied philosophy.

Stay away from Russel. Stick to the Catholic authors. Ground yourself in the truth as seen by men of faith before you decide to take on the world. Linus2nd
