CALLING ALL PHILOSOPHY LOVERS AND LEARNERS

A friend and I are about to start what we’re calling our Philosophy Challenge 2010-2011.

The Challenge summarized

Read 17 pages per day, 5 days a week (weekends off) in Frederick Copleston’s 9-volume History of Philosophy series, beginning on the 1st Monday of Advent 2010 and wrapping up in November 2011. The whole series will thus be completed in just under one calendar year.

I realize this notice is coming a bit late for other people to decide if they want to join us on the start date, which is the day after tomorrow; but I just had the inspiration today to post about our Challenge on CAF and to setup a CAF group (see below).

More information about Copleston’s multi-volume History can be found here:

More details

Challenge begins: 29 November, Monday of the 1st Week of Advent 2010

Read 17 (seventeen) pages Mondays - Fridays. Leave off reading on Saturdays and Sundays, and on Christmas Eve 2010 (a Friday), Ash Wednesday 2011, Easter Triduum 2011.

On the 253rd day of reading, read the remaining 7 pages.

This is for a total of 4,291 pages. I adjusted the page count to include “front matter” like prefaces. The count doesn’t include the alphabetical indices nor the tables of contents, but does included the appendices in the backs of the volumes (mainly bibliographies).

One calendar year = 365 days, minus weekends = 261 days. So by covering the series in 253 days, we should finish up about two weeks prior to Monday of the 1st Week of Advent 2011.

CAF GROUP

We’re going to use a CAF Group to track each other’s progress, encourage one another, share insights and ask questions as we work through the books together.

Participants will need a copy of the books, which can be readily purchased online and in larger book stores, or borrowed from a library.

Using the titles of the individual volumes or the whole series, one can easily locate them for purchase with a search on Amazon.com, bn.com, Google products, etc.

Various book sellers offer discounts if one is looking to buy the whole set.

I already read the whole thing. You’re all in for a treat if you take up the challenge.
