My teen son, after graduation from high school moved across country to Phoenix, has an a apartment and is working. Some of our family is sort of nearby. The trouble is two Sundays have gone by and he has not been to mass. One thing he said was that “all” the Catholic churches around him have Mass in Spanish. I know many arguments for this but I cannot push him too much or I will push him away.I don’t want him digging his heels in.

But I do wonder what churches are near him! I look up on Catholic Directory online and see 44 listing for Phoenix. Also he is near the Scottsdale border and there are 9 listings there. I wish there was a way to type in a zip code like you do for a store and you get a list of what church is how far from there! If anyone is from that area maybe they can point me out some to try. I will look up Masstimes.org and also look up their website to see if the Mass is English. he is near N.29th and E. Grandview Rd., 85032

With all due respect, it is time to let go. I can’t help but think one of the reasons he chose to move so far away was to be able to stop going to church.

I know as a mom you want what is best for your son. And yes, it will hurt. But to go so far as to find a church for him will REALLY turn him off

There’s a great church Called Saint Daniel The Prophet that is in that area. It is a great church, with great priests and a flexible mass schedule (their latest mass is at 5:00 P.M) if I’m not mistaken.

You seem very confident of your opinion, Anglewannabe. I do not know why, or from what your viewpoint stems though.

I am not a “helicopter mom”. I primarily entrust my son to Our Lord in prayer, trusting Him that this is in fact my most powerful help for my son. However, I am not so sure that Moms should offer NOTHING but prayer.

At any rate, if anyone reading this thread would have a quick moment of empathy for me, a Mom with a suddenly empty nest worrying a bit for my son on his own across the country and not going to Mass yet for the first time in years, I would really appreciate if you would, before you go onto whatever you are doing next, just pray a quick little prayer to our Lord, or entrust a request to Our Lady or St. Joseph, to pull my son into what looks like an awesome Church very nearby: St. Joan of Arc. And may you be blessed, too.

Young people are often not comfortable going to Mass alone without their family. Is your son enrolled in college? Is there a college nearby? There might be a Newman Center or a local parish that a college is located in that might have a student Mass. I would look into that and see if he might be comfortable attending there.
