Photocopying CCC?

Is it illegal to photocopy some parts of the Catechism? What about its Compendium? Thank you.

Unauthorized verbatim copying of a protected work infringes on the copyright, unless it’s a fair use.

So,

Unauthorized? Yes. I assume.
Verbatim? Yes. Photocopiers are pretty good at this 😉
Protected? The publisher probably wishes to protect its reproduction right. So, yes.

Is it a fair use? Well, I don’t know. Depends on a few factors. See here:

If you have the CCC in the first place why would you need to copy it?
If you have it and you only want to copy parts of it, why? For what purpose.

Here in the forums we copy and paste sections of the CCC into threads regularly.
 
Maybe he needs copies for poor starving students who can’t afford one.

Personally I don’t any problem with that.
As I mentioned lots of us copy and paste sections of the CCC into the threads in the forums for discussion.

I don’t see anything wrong with it either. If you’re using it for educational purposes and a group discussion, just make sure they know it’s from the CCC. 🙂 This would be no different than quoting the CCC here on CAF, using it in a research paper or for a college class on theology, or using it to create a brochure such as the popular “This We Believe” document. 🙂
 
I’m no expert on copyright laws (and I have no idea about the copyright laws in the Phillipines), but I have heard that using such brief excerpts for educational purposes is legitimate.
