For those who are unfamiliar with this era, there is a movie, For Greater Glory, that is well worth the watch. It is done well and quite inspirational. The actors are experienced, Oscar Isaac, Andy Garcia, and Peter O’Toole, in his last role before his death.

It is historically accurate, from what I can gather. I looked up the dissenting views on that and found only a bunch of “Oh, yeah, what about…,” meaning, it does not give “both sides.”

While significant parts of it such as the martyrdoms of Blessed Fr Pro, some other priests, and St Jose Sanchez del Rio were historically accurate, the film takes some liberties. The priest character played by Peter O’Toole is a composite, and Father Vega in real life was not as heroic as he is portrayed in the film, and likely engaged in some seriously sinful behavior. I don’t think he will be getting a sainthood cause any time.

I am devoted to Bl. Fr Pro and also a fan of other Cristero martyrs, and have been to a number of their shrines and graves as well as to the Cristero War museum in Mexico, so that’s where I get my info.
Movie is still worth watching for the stories of the martyrs.

You can still see the spot where Bl. Miguel Pro was martyred. It’s now built up so there is an apartment building on it and restaurants across the street. Fr. Calloway had his picture taken standing against the building wall with his arms out.

Blessed Miguel Pro and the Cristero Martyrs, pray for us!
