The celebration of the 36th anniversary of the canonization of Fr. Maximilian Kolbe took place today in Auschwitz. “St. Maximilian gave his life to save the unity of marriage and to give back the father to his children”,said Bishop Roman Pindel from the Diocese of Bielsko-Zywiec.

60 years ago today, on October 9, 1958, Pope Pius XII - Eugenio Pacelli (1876-1958) - died. He was elected on March 2, 1939 - on his birthday - and led the Catholic Church through World War II and in the immediate postwar era.

The windmill on one side and the lone tree on the other turn what would have been an ordinary documentary on crops to a work of art. Well done!

View from straight above of the contents of a scrap iron barge as it passes through the upper Saint Anthony Falls lock and dam on the Mississippi River. At the time this picture was taken (2014) this was the furthest upstream of the 29 locks and dams on the Mississippi River. A few months later this lock was closed to navigation. Now barge traffic coming up the Mississippi can only get as far as St. Paul, Minnesota.
