I am going to go for a walk there later, since I haven’t been there for about a week, and I’m going to go check if they have. It’s not very far away, it’s only about half a mile. In fact, I can go to the far side of my yard, and see it, although it’s behind other people’s yards. I like living near a lake.

What is remarkable about the stage coach picture is that the camera must have been perfectly panning to match the speed of the coach. Because of the low light levels, the shutter time was necessarily longer than it would have been during the day. The smear of the lights in the background shows just how far the coach moved during the shutter time, and it is huge! All the more remarkable that the coach, and men on it, are in perfect focus!

A useful byproduct of the selective clarity is that the main subject - the coach - is beautifully set off from everything that is not moving, drawing attention to what is in focus. This is sometimes done in portraits by using narrow depth of field. But that technique is not possible here because there are many things that are close to the same distance to the camera as the coach. Only the speed of the coach distinguishes it from everything else.

Another one of Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland that I took. It was very misty that day giving the castle a very eerie look.
