The other day I was talking to someone about moving from where I am. After telling them about my father who is terminally ill, I said something along the lines of ‘When he is out of the picture’ or ‘out of the way’ then I would be able to move. I did not mean to say it that way, it was just something that came out. I love my father and I would never want him to die quicker or anything along those lines so I can move. Does this constitute as grave sin? I was horrified that it even came out of my mouth! I can have a morbid sense of humor but I feel terrible about it.

It’s not even a little bit a sin.
We all put our foot in our mouth sometimes🙂

It is a credit to you that you are willing to keep your father “in your way” so to speak. It means that you are putting his needs above your own. Many people postpone decisions they otherwise would not so they can accommodate aging parents. If you had said “until he no longer needs me” and meant the same sentiment.

If anything saying it this way reminds you that you are making sacrifices, and that sometimes a resentment can grow inside without one realizing it. You can pray that you walk in the grace to always keep him in the “picture” as long as he has need of you.

Sounds like more of a slip of the tongue than a sin.

Being the caregiver for a terminal family member is a monumentally difficult thing, admitting that does not mean you love the person any less. Making plans for after they pass on is a healthy thing.

It sounds like something I would just confess to God in prayer, since you said, “it just came out”. the church teaches that “sufficient reflection” is required for a mortal sin to occur.

There’s nothing to confess!

You spoke a simple truth. Truth is never evil.- even if sometimes propriety might have us keep it to ourselves.

I meant, he wondered if it was “mortal sin”; it isn’t, but if he felt uncomfortable, to just privately pray to God.
