Hmm… an old thread seems to have regained life.
The Church does not teach that Christ is physically present in the Holy Eucharist. Christ is really, truly, and substantially present, but not physically present in the strict sense. The bread and wine retain all the physical properties of bread and wine even after the consecration. However, the substance, as St. Thomas would say, is no longer bread or wine, but Christ.
