Physical relationship between non-married couple

Lets start out by taking the sixth commandment which forbids I say forbids all words looks or actions contrary to holy purity. The Ninth forbids all impure thoughts and desires willfully entertained or concented to.
Father Chad Ripperger gives a very detatiled talk on this and explaines it in detail and it is taken from the Catechism and Church teaching.
The problem is that people are using excuses to justafy their wrong doing by saying no one would get married if they stuck by the rules. That is not the point. If we want to go to Heaven we must obey the ten commandments.
I will never forget what a priest said at a retreat I was at many years ago and he was talking about sins of the flesh. He asked this question. Where do you think you would go if you were having intercourse and you are not married and you died at that moment?
If anyone is commiting any kind of mortal sins of impurity and they die at that moment. Where do you think they are going to go?
French kissing is a symbol of sex and is forbidden and for married people only.

This is so scary. There’s actually people out there that think this? That an umarried French kisser is going to Hell? If that’s true, then Hell is going to be one very crowded place, indeed. (And yes, throw that quote of “Few will pass through the gate of Heaven”, or something like that).

Look, you may be right, or I may be right. Neither of us knows. (It’s hard for me to believe, though, that a fornicator who led a decent life is damned while a repentant murderer is off the hook) It’s just so annoying when people have that holier-than-thou Flanders attitude and insist that they are right and the other isn’t.

Hell should be scary. This selection from the Catechism suggests great caution with regards to sexual temptation.
2520 Baptism confers on its recipient the grace of purification from all sins. But the baptized must continue to struggle against concupiscence of the flesh and disordered desires. With God’s grace he will prevail
  • by the *virtue *and gift of chastity, for chastity lets us love with upright and undivided heart;
  • by purity of intention which consists in seeking the true end of man: with simplicity of vision, the baptized person seeks to find and to fulfill God’s will in everything;313
  • by purity of vision, external and internal; by discipline of feelings and imagination; by refusing all complicity in impure thoughts that incline us to turn aside from the path of God’s commandments: “Appearance arouses yearning in fools”;314
  • by prayer:
I thought that continence arose from one’s own powers, which I did not recognize in myself. I was foolish enough not to know . . . that no one can be continent unless you grant it. For you would surely have granted it if my inner groaning had reached your ears and I with firm faith had cast my cares on you.315
2521 Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.
2522 Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.
2523 There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body. It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things. Modesty inspires a way of life which makes it possible to resist the allurements of fashion and the pressures of prevailing ideologies.
2524 The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening consciousness of being a subject. Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person.
2525 Christian purity requires a purification of the social climate. It requires of the communications media that their presentations show concern for respect and restraint. Purity of heart brings freedom from widespread eroticism and avoids entertainment inclined to voyeurism and illusion.
2526 So called moral permissiveness rests on an erroneous conception of human freedom; the necessary precondition for the development of true freedom is to let oneself be educated in the moral law. Those in charge of education can reasonably be expected to give young people instruction respectful of the truth, the qualities of the heart, and the moral and spiritual dignity of man.
2527 "The Good News of Christ continually renews the life and culture of fallen man; it combats and removes the error and evil which flow from the ever-present attraction of sin. It never ceases to purify and elevate the morality of peoples. It takes the spiritual qualities and endowments of every age and nation, and with supernatural riches it causes them to blossom, as it were, from within; it fortifies, completes, and restores them in Christ."316
    IN BRIEF
    2528
“Everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (*Mt *5:28).
2529 The ninth commandment warns against lust or carnal concupiscence.
2530 The struggle against carnal lust involves purifying the heart and practicing temperance.
2531 Purity of heart will enable us to see God: it enables us even now to see things according to God.
2532 Purification of the heart demands prayer, the practice of chastity, purity of intention and of vision. 2533 Purity of heart requires the modesty which is patience, decency, and discretion. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person.

I meant that the idea that an unmarried French kisser is damned is scary.

The poster you responded to made no claim of damnation, only the sinfulness of impure actions. His remarks were relatively consistent with the CCC.

The poster did imply that it is mortal sin and that there are more people in hell for these sins than any other. The “liberal” side of the argument is that committed or engaged couples can frenc kiss and hug, but still not do what the op describes. I think the point is if a faithful Catholic is living with the faith of Christ and happened to make out with their fiancé, and that was damning, well, that’s really hard for me to see.

LOL! This quote made my day! I’m 57 years old, and I don’t think I know anyone who didn’t French kiss before they were married. Maybe a survey is in order…😉

Thank you very much Davidv. I felt for a little while that I was out here on my own. You are absolutely right. I am saying the same thing as the CCC.
Now to the O P. I am not saying that there are more people in Hell because of sins of the flesh than all other sins combined. Our Blessed Mother told that to the three children at Fatima in 1917 and asked them to teach this prayer to the world. O my Jesus forgive us our sins and save us from the fires of Hell and lead all Souls to Heaven especially those in most need of thy mercy. Remember it is easier for a Camel to get through the Eye of a Needle than it is for us to get into Heaven.
It is interesting that when someone posts the truth on this Thread that some one will come back and say show me the truth or prove it to me. Remember Thomas when the other Apostels told him that Christ had been there and he said I will not beleive Untill I place my Finger in the place of the Nails and my hand in His side. Blessed are those who have not seen and have beleived.
We all are asked to save Souls and that is all I am trying to do. I am sure there are a lot of poor Souls in Hell that wish they had beleived when they were told the truth and tried to live good holy and pure lives . Like Father John Caropi says I really dont care what anyone thinks. I am simply telling the truth.

Well, this has gone the way of every single other CAF thread like this. What amazes me is that, even though it is always with different people, the roles are always the same. There’s:

(1) The youngish, loyal Catholic who says, briefly, “Nothing against pre-marital affection, dude, but you’re going too far. Put on the brakes.”

(2) The middle-aged self-styled canon lawyer who quotes nineteen verses of the Catechism, two pages of canon law, and a passage of Aquinas, only to reach the conclusion, “According to the infallible moral teachings of the Holy Catholic Church and the powerful arguments of the Greatest Philosophical Minds the World Has Ever Seen, you may be going too far… but on the other hand you may not be.”

(3) The older Catholic, probably catechized pre-Council, who doesn’t really know all that much about official Church teachings or how to discuss them, but, by God, she was taught good social mores by her nuns, and she watches more EWTN than the rest of her diocese combined, and she is going to tell you that French kissing, or plain kissing, or hugging, or touching, or (in extreme cases) looking at your girlfriend is probably a mortal sin and definitely grave matter and you are in danger of hell! These users can almost never cite an actual doctrine directly supporting their position, but instead make elaborate, spun-out extrapolations from very basic teachings they learned in grammar school, based on a thousand unrecognized presuppositions, and label their extraordinary conclusions “plain homespun common sense, like Mother Angelica taught it to us.”

(4) The atheist (or liberal Protestant), who is on CAF because Catholic thinking simultaneously annoys and intrigues him, and because he has a lot of free time and wants to spar a little with his intellectual peers. The atheist invariably says something like, "Just go ahead and do it and leave those Victorian moral shackles behind! It feels good man! The atheist (or liberal Protestant) also, in 100% of cases, is “shocked, shocked!” that there is anyone like #3 in this establishment, asks how it’s possible that anyone could still live in that “medieval morality,” and, in criticizing #3, manages to deride the entire system of Catholic morals and the natural law.

At this point, the thread descends into a free-for-all, as the first two groups defend themselves against #3’s charges of promiscuity and sin, while #3 accuses everyone of ganging up on her (which is actually true, because nobody wants to be seen siding with the prudes, even when the prudes are occasionally right), and #4 makes some sweepingly broad statements that divide the members of groups #1 and #2, who scramble to side with either group #3 or group #4. Then everyone commences a grand search for Church documents, historical evidence, studies on the effectiveness of abstinence-only education, and – the Holy Grail of these discussions – an actual, concrete line that can be drawn between “appropriate” and “inappropriate” in a dating relationship. (Such lines are, of course, completely mythical.)

Now, I’ve played all four roles at some point in my membership here, so don’t think I’m personally criticizing any particular user. But the overall pattern of these threads is both absolutely predictable and absolutely useless to the OP. Isn’t there some way we can give a comprehensive answer to this question, an answer that gives the Church teaching as well as several different but equally valid prudential interpretations of that teaching? And could we all give up on the idea that there is a firm, bright, clear behavioral line that dating people should not cross – a line that is the same for all relationships in all cultures at all points in the relationship? The Church’s own teaching on modesty concedes that much of modesty is culturally relative.

And, when we write that answer, could we save it and repost it for all these threads, thus saving everyone a lot of time and energy?

Incidentally, to the OP, my thoughts:

As a rules lawyer, I can say with reasonably high confidence that you and your girlfriend are crossing the line with your “genital thrusting.” To me, it sounds like dry humping. It sounds like direct stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. Depending on whether it actually is pleasurable or not, Antrim (this thread’s resident #3) could even be right: even if neither of you orgasm, this could actually be mutual masturbation, and that has to stop immediately. You did the right thing by asking. Now that you have full knowledge, however, you have to stop or confession may be a very awkward experience next time you visit.

And as a prudential judgement from this young, loyal Catholic who loves French kissing, your post set off a hundred alarm bells in my head. You have gone beyond the bounds that any version of modesty permits. You have entered territory that involves direct sexual pleasure (rather than the indirect sexual pleasure provided by kissing and hugging). It’s great that you two are planning to get married, but right now you need to put the brakes on and dial back your physical relationship. (And don’t worry about the flame going out. If you get bored of kissing before your wedding day, you’re doing it wrong!)

Oh man… seriously?! Yeah, don’t take any time to discern or anything, to get to know the person. Just rush it so you can have sex. And we wonder why the divorce rate is so high?
If they had just met, then I’d say you’re absolutely right, but the OP states that there are three years between them already. I think it would be a good idea for them to get married or at least engaged and set a date.

The Church teaches very clearly no touching of any kind below the Neck and no french kissing. That is resereved for marriage. Like the O P said one thing leads to another and before you know it you have gone to far.
Antrim and davidv, the Catechism section that was posted DID NOT in any way back up this claim. No particular parts of the body or behaviors were mentioned. So no, the Church does not* clearly* teach no touching of any kind below the neck and no french kissing. It’s not even specific about the amount of body or which parts must be covered for modesty. What that quote showed me was how much the Church leaves up to our own judgement.

Now, the CCC does clearly condemn fornication, but fornication is actual sexual intercourse between the unmarried. And I did say I thought the OP was going too far, because they won’t stay at that stage for long… they’ll go all the way soon. And yeah, maybe they should get married sooner rather than later, but not for the sole reason that they want to have sex. It needs to be right in more ways than that.

Well said

Yes, most likely the best solution would be to get married, BUT, I would imagine that if they married it would put an end to their college money and their HEALTH INSURANCE. I think some of the other suggestions given here make sense - don’t put yourself in situations where you are alone for too long a time. Exercise together! Set some goals as a team such as running 5 miles or swimming 2 miles. Last but not least, STUDY! I admire these kids and hope that everything works out.

I join you in admiration, and you are probably right that they would lose there parents Health Insurance, if not financial support.

I can relate to you thememphisman. I have been with my love for about 2.5 years, and we are getting married in one year. It has really been a challenge, esp now that we are engaged. I’ve been tracking for nfp, and I’ve realized it is even more difficult for me around the time of ovulation. What you are doing is most likely wrong, but you are not alone. I don’t know exactly what the correct way to go about it is, because you can’t treat them exactly as your brother/sister. And getting married before you are ready (financially, emotionally, etc) is not a good idea, marriage is for life. All I have come to is, thank goodness for confession. We try to keep it to light kissing, and stop if we are going to far, but if we slip up there is always confession.

Do you and your gf have any practices for when you both want to go farther? I would be interested to know what works to stop things from going on, take a walk, pray, etc…

I would say it is very foolish to not beleive what the Moral Theologins teach about french kissing outside of marriage and other sins of the Flesh.
Saint Thomas Aquines taught the same thing.
Wheather you like it or not these acts are for married people only no one else.
That is the way it is.

It worries me very much when someone says all you have is what a couple of priests said. It is not just what a couple of priests said. Every good Pope, Cardinal, Bishop, and Priest down through the ages teaches the same thing because they are trying to save Souls. We must live by the ten commandments and every thing they entail. When we die and we go before God there is no justafacation or ratafacation. We did it or we did not. The laws of God never change no matter what generation or century. That is the big mistake people make. They think that what applied two hundred years ago does not apply today and it does just the very same.
I hope that maybe by posting the truth on here that I saved a Soul.
That is what we are called to do.

Get married if you are ready for this level of physical intimacy. What is there about remaining single that will facilitate your completing school faster?
I don’t think this is a good idea. Getting married because you want to have sex licitly isn’t the greatest idea.
