Kidding aside, I have to mention that while I have not been in live chat in a Jewish chatroom, I have been in Yahoo Catholic Chat. The venom spewed in there is pretty heavy duty. Rather than a Christian-Muslim fight (there are some of those too), it is almost always the fundamentalist-vs-Catholics who are going toe to toe. I can’t count how many times I was called a Mary/statue/wafer worshipper, papist, Romish, Whore of Babylon, er… well, you get the picture.

Back to the topic at hand. Your point is made but not every thread is like that. However, just bring up those “hot topics” and inevitably someone gets their nose out of joint and the insults fly. Perhaps everyone should make a habit of saying “Respectfully, I disagree…” and then go on to state their case.

What’s with the “Whore of Babylon” insult? What’s the background on it?
 
In Revalations 17:3

Then he carried me away in spirit to a deserted place where I saw a woman seated on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names with seven heads and ten horns. The woman was wearing purple and scarlet and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls. She held in her hand a gold cup that was filled with the abominable and sorded deeds of her harlotry on her forehead was written a name which is a mystery “Babylon the great, mother of harlots and of abominations of the earth” I saw that the woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of the witnesses to Jesus

A lot of protestants call the Catholic church the Whore of Babylon. It’s generally one of the more offensive insults I’ve heard. (Revalation is a vision of the future combined with issues that then-current Christians were dealing with (written in code) and a few supernatural truths revealed. Mary being coronated and such is in Revalations.

It is from Revelation 17 "4: The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her fornication;
5: and on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of harlots and of earth’s abominations.”

Some people, mainly anti-Catholic fundamentalists who think they have the bible all figured out, claim that the Catholic Church is the enemy of Christ and that it is the harlot that is described. In other words, they claim the Church is anti-Christ. There is a lot more to it, but that is the gist of it. Here is a short article that gives some more information.
