MSSheBear very specifically states the priest consecrates ONE host and takes the rest from the tabernacle. (see bolding above) I KNOW those in the tabernacle are consecrated. My question for MSSheBear is, if the priest only consecrates ONE host, when are the others hosts used during that Mass consecrated?

I’m sorry that I could not respond until now. I guess I need to clarify that at the Daily Mass with the twenty attenders our current pastor consecrated only the large host and the rest of the Hosts for distribution are taken from the ciborium which is taken out of the Tabernacle. On the weekend Masses we have hundreds of hosts consecrated. Only once was the ciborium on the altar stuffed with hosts usually it is taken directly out of the Tabernacle. I assume that the Hosts in the Tabernacle were from the Weekend Masses where hundreds of hosts are consecrated.

Therefor, I suspect that the other hosts reserved in the tabernacle were previously consecrated at the alter during another Mass - that is the only way the hosts may be licitly consecrated. I don’t read anything in Canon 838.1 and subsequent that says the priest must distribute communion. Neither do I read that in the link to the GIRM which you provided but only a description of the bread/wine to be used and the word desirable in relation to distribution.

On the contrary, I have heard it said many times on this website that only the priest need receive communion at any given Mass.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear, 838.1 and the subsequent sections. Follow the link further down in the post to the Cannon Law website. Basically the priest may not alter he Mass.

As for only the priest receiving during a Mass with a Congregation (GIRM, USCCB) it is expected from the rubrics (as given here) that the Ordinary, Extraordinary (if present), other ministers, and the congregation are to receive communion.
I would suspect that during a Mass with the Congregation, if the celebrant, without good and just cause, withheld communion from the congregation, he might be in violation of several of the Canons as well as the GIRM… Cannon Can. 843 §1 comes to mind:
843 §1 Sacred ministers cannot deny the sacraments to those who seek them at appropriate times, are properly disposed, and are not prohibited by law from receiving them.

§2. Pastors of souls and other members of the Christian faithful, according to their respective ecclesiastical function, have the duty to take care that those who seek the sacraments are prepared to receive them by proper evangelization and catechetical instruction, attentive to the norms issued by competent authority.
expecting to Receive communion during a scheduled Holy Mass for the Parish would, IMHO, fall well under that directive.

I’ll double check with the Pastor/Deacon in the next few days, maybe I mis-understood… 🤷

You might be using the ones from the Sisters of the Visitation in North Georgia, maybe?

The very few low gluten hosts we need we buy from a nearby parish that gets them in large quantities. They sell us what we need in 3 month increments.

Ha! We used to use those. We bought one of those small under the counter refrigerators to keep them in. Father felt they got stale . :confused: (past pastor) .

We always uses the smaller presider’s host. We never use the one you can break into pieces. With a very large parish like yours, I can see why they would go with the big, scored ones.

Our pastor wants people to see Jesus at the elevation and emphasizes the word BEHOLD.

He also breaks the host into pieces and puts a few in each ciborium so that the communicants from the pew can receive them. There is no difference between the host he held in his hand and the ones that were in a ciboria on the altar but it is a nice touch.

People have asked why they received an irregularly shaped host and are usually happy when they learn that it was part of the presider’s host, especially the children. I have heard a child exclaim, “Mom, I got a piece of the big one!”

It’s just one of the little gestures of reverence out Pastor quietly does which many don’t see. We are really lucky to have such a man.
