I have a quick question about choosing your patron saint. What is the best reason to chose a saint as your patron? Do you choose the saint who is patron/ess of something you’re fond of or relating to your profession (i.e. a doctor choosing the patron saint of doctors) or do you choose one whose life story appeals to you ? I have a few saints I’m looking into, but I want to choose the right one and for the right reasons. Thanks for any advice!

This is going to sound odd, perhaps, but how about letting a saint pick you? While we can call on any saint to pray for us, protect us, help us, etc., usually there is one or more who seem to be “assigned” to each one of us. Just ask your saints about it, and I have no doubt they will show you who is your special one(s).

Don’t stop at just one. Why should you? They’re not in competition with each other, nor does a devotion to one preclude devotion to others!

I have a couple, some because I relate to them, others who I admire because I’m unlike them but want to be like them, and one as much because his feast is my birthday as anything else!

I have another question to add, since I haven’t been confirmed yet, but it’s probably a really dumb question.

I’m a female, can I pick a male saint as my patron saint? What if I picked St. Jude? Do I take his name Jude? Or can I call myself Judy ? 🙂

You can pick any saint you want and take his/her name. It’s not uncommon for men in Europe to take Mary, for instance. So, if you feel St. Jude is your saint, then by all means feel free and proud to be called by his name.

Well, I was born 4 October 1944, Feast Day of St. Francis. He is more or less my general guide, including my ongoing formation to be a 1221 penitent.

But when I am praying, I ask Saint Philomena to be praying with me on my right side, and Saint Mary Magdalene praying with me on my left. The three of us side by side at the kneeler.

I was going for St. Josemaria.

But God had other plans. So April 7th I’ll be Baptised as Patrick.

Also two other Saints I call Patrons. St. Benedict and St. Michael.

St. Benedict is a greedy Saint! 😛 He picked my Grandma and I when we started looking for a patron saint for my confirmation. He’s not my confirmation saint (Pascal Baylon is) but he’s still an important saint that I talk to often, but he seems to have chosen quite a few other people as well! I hear people often say Benedict is their patron, or special to them.

Your telling me! I’m also feel I am being called as an Oblate to his order…

I can’t tell you how to select on your patron saint. You can choose one based on your profession, if you want, or something else. When I converted, I decided I wanted a saint that really spoke to me by their life and deeds. I eventually selected St. Joan of Arc. I’m glad I did. I believe I have benefited immensely from her intercession. And I feel inspired by her life and what she went through. I suggest you just pray for guidance. In the end, you’ll select the right one.

This is not odd at all:)

When I was looking for “more”, I called Opus Dei (attended many meetings, but as holy as it was, not for me)–no luck, Dominicans–no luck, then finally got through to the SFO–and knew I was home.

I can not pick just one…so I will name my “big 5”

Mary–1st and foremost…she saved my young daughter’s life

Then

San Francesco (St Francis—I am a huge believer in leaving the saints’ names the way they were in their native language), Santa Chiara, Padre Pio and JP2
