Not to* excuse * the Muslims in Afghanistan who were howling for this man’s blood, as I disagree with their behaviour, but just a couple of things to please take into consideration. The Muslim world is in a “dark age” right now, basically. Things are at a low point right now, in my opinion. In the future , I predict a definite resurgence, an “Islamic renaissance” if you will, and God-willing. What with the upswing of Western conversions, and (generally) higher birthrates amongst Muslims than among Christians (even nominal Christians only) , and also the fact that more Muslims, especially the young, “keep” their faith today (as opposed to Christians, Catholic or otherwise, so many of whom seem to fall away and just become the same as the largely “secularized” majority of Jews today for instance).
The Muslims in these kinds of pictures are poor, usually unemployed, probably hungry, maybe ill in some cases, definitely ill-tempered in general as a result of these factors. They have nothing to truly focus on all day except for the Faith (indeed their 'aqida is the one thing that they feel keeps them strong and holds their communities together, etc). And furthermore they feel themselves and their culture(s) and communities to be besieged right now , not only physically besieged and even Occupied (as is the case with Afghanistan and Iraq by the US / Britain, etc), but culturally besieged and occupied as well. That is why things such as the obscene unnecessarily provocative cartoons of the Prophet (saaws) and incidences such as this, a conversion to Christianity in their midst, rattles * these people far more to the core than anything comparable would or even could possibly “rattle” a Christian living a good happy prosperous life in the West. If some Muslim author wrote a book profaning Jesus (pbuh) , which no decent Muslim would do anyway, there might be some moderate protests by a some Christians, sure. But, in general, since the majority of the people in the nominally Christian (but actually totally secular) Western nations are A) generally far better educated , B ) far better fed and generally healthy in mind and body, C) not viewing themselves or their countries as “under siege” by forces they are powerless against and cannot effectively combat , and D) usually not very religious-minded in the first place, such Western folks are simply going to “blow off” any incidents like these , laugh it off, shake their heads, whatever. Like I said, sure there might be some moderate protesting or something done by the more zealous factions of Christians but in general the two societies , the two cultures , are not * truly comparable right now because they are simply at far different stages of cultural development. That is not to say the Muslim societies are less “culturally developed” , but they are just far differently developed. There never was , yet, anything approaching a “Renaissance” or “Enlightenment” in Islam. Religion is taken as seriously in such places as you see in these kinds of photographs as Christianity , the Church , used to be taken in pre-Reformation era Europe, especially by the “commoners” and the serfs and peasants.
